The Blackburn High School opened on 1st February 1956 with 128 Form 1 pupils and a staff of 8. The 20-acre site on the corner of Williams and Springvale road was surrounded by orchards and pine trees. The trees inspired the school motto: ' Ad licem crescimus' - 'We are growing towards the light'. The first headmaster was Mr V. Percy. The artist’s comment on her work: “The Rowitta”, Flagstaff Hill. Warrnambool: "This boat was the venue for our daughter’s Wedding. The pastel work was undertaken after a beautiful day at Flagstaff Hill in 2012. I enjoyed working with the shadows and the foliage. Carmel Beavis” The popular steam ferry Rowitta is featured in this pastel picture on canvas by local artist Carmel Beavis. The iconic Norfolk pines stand tall against a blue sky, while colourful reflections shimmer in Flagstaff Hill’s harbour. The historic lifeboat “Warrnambool” is dwarfed by Rowitta’s size. Carmel’s daughter celebrated her wedding on board the Rowitta, which had been a very popular exhibit visitors for around forty years. This picture is one of several that were created by Carmel for her family and friends as a memento of the wedding and a way to keep the memory of Rowitta alive. Some of Carmel’s other works illustrate Flagstaff Hill’s 2017 publication “Tearooms Cookbook”. Some of Carmel’s paintings featured in the Tearooms Cookbook, produced around 2017 for fundraising for Flagstaff Hill. The Rowitta was a timber steam ferry built in Hobart in 1909 using planks of Huon and Karri wood. She was a favourite of sightseeing passengers along Tasmania’s Tamar and Derwent rivers for 30 years. Rowitta was also known as Tarkarri and Sorrentoand had worked as a coastal trading vessel between Devonport and Melbourne as well as along the southern coast of Australia. In 1974 Rowitta was purchased by Flagstaff Hilt to convert into a representation of the Speculant, a historic and locally significant sailing ship listed on the Victorian Heritage Database. (The Speculant was built in Scotland in 1895 and traded timber between the United Kingdom and Russia. Warrnambool’s P J McGennan & Co. then bought her to trade pine timber from New Zealand to Victorian ports and cargo to Melbourne. She was the largest ship ever registered with Warrnambool as her home port, playing a key role in the early 1900s in the Port of Warrnambool. In 1911, on her way to Melbourne, she was wrecked near Cape Otway. None of the nine crew lost their lives.) The promised funds for converting Rowitta into the Speculant were no longer available, so she was restored back to her original configuration. She represented the importance of coastal traders to transport, trade and communication in Australia times before rail and motor vehicles. Sadly, in 2015 the time had come to demolish the Rowitta due to her excessive deterioration and the high cost of on-going repairs. She had given over 100 years of service and pleasure to those who knew her. Early in 2019 Carmel gifted this picture to her friend Shirley Lindsay, who had been President of Wadas Artist Society. A few months later Shirley and her husband John (founding Director of Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village) thought the picture would be appropriate to Flagstaff Hill and presented it with pleasure to the Friends of Flagstaff Hill group later that year.The Rowitta represents the importance of coastal traders to transport, trade and communication in Australia before rail and motor vehicles. The painting is also significant as a record of an exhibit at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village from is early beginnings. Cyril Percy Callister, a chemist by training, became a food technologist and the inventor of the well known spread 'Vegemite'. A Ballarat School of Mines (SMB) student around 1910, Callister then went to Melbourne University where he obtained his B.Sc. in 1914, M.Sc. in 1917 and D.Sc. in 1931. With Sir David Rivett in 1931 he secured the royal charter for the Royal Australian Chemical Institute, becoming president of the Society of Chemical Industry of Victoria in 1935-36. Vegemite, a yeast based spread, and perhaps one of most famous trademarks in Australia, was discovered around 1922 by Cyril Percy Callister. He was hired by the Fred Walker Company (a Melbourne based manufacturer later known as Kraft) as a laboratory assistant to develop a yeast extract spread. It took some years but by 1954 the special Vegemite song 'Happy Little Vegemites' demonstrated the popularity of the spread. Callister was also known for packing cheese in a can to preserve it and developing Kraft processed cheese. he son of a school teacher and postmaster he was born at Chute on 16 February 1893 and died on 5 October 1949. His brother Reginald Clive Callister (1889-1971) was also a student of SMB. In July 1909, a modest 12-page booklet was put together by members of the fledgling Old Ruytonians Association (ORA) and distributed to the Ruyton Girls' School community. It was one of their first projects, and their aim was to nurture continuing interest in the School among former and current students. They named it "The Ruytonian." At first, The Ruytonian was produced twice yearly, and always bore a plain cover with a simple name banner. Initially, it was the work of volunteer editors from the ORA, but in 1913 they handed the publication over to the first student editors, Esther Gibson and Lucy Tickell. Since that time, the style and content of The Ruytonian has continuously evolved. The biggest shifts occurred in 1942 when it transitioned to a yearly publication, and in 1969 when it moved to a larger A4 format with a cover image specifically selected for that year.The record has strong historic significance as it pertains to the fourth oldest girls' school in Victoria, Australia. Ruyton was founded in 1878 in the Bulleen Road, Kew, home of newly widowed Mrs Charlotte Anderson (now High Street South). Thus, the record can be used as a reference example for research into Victorian school history. Badge received by Dorothy Kiely in 2012 on the 70th anniversary of the Australian Women's Land Army. The Australian Women’s Land Army (AWLA) was formed during the Second World War to combat rising labour shortages in the farming sector. From December 1941, when Japan entered the war, the nation’s need to build up its armed forces was placed above the needs of other industries. Agricultural labour was steadily diverted to the armed services and war industry To meet the shortfall in rural labour, State and private women’s land organisations were organised, modelled on those established in Great Britain during the First and Second World Wars. A national body was formed on 27 July 1942 under the jurisdiction of the Director General of Manpower. While policy was devised by the Commonwealth Government, the organisation of the AWLA remained State-based. An extensive recruiting campaign was undertaken for new members. Most members of the existing land armies were later incorporated into the AWLA as well.
