John Simpson arrived in Bacchus Marsh around 1848. In 1850 he established a butchery business. He continued to operate this business in Main Street Bacchus Marsh until his death in 1890. His son John Simpson and one of his brothers, Edward took over the business and operated it until 1923. John Simpson the younger died in 1940 having lived all but a few months of his 92 years in Main Street Bacchus Marsh. Edward L. Simpson died in Corowa, NSW in 1937. The younger John Simpson's recollections of Bacchus Marsh in the 1850s to 1870s were published in the Bacchus Marsh Express on the 25 June 1932.Small sepia unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. During the early 1900s little girls' dresses were fashioned on the style worn by older women. Girls dresses were knee length with trimmings of lace and ribbon. Collars were often removable for ease of washing. Leather lace-up boots and woollen stocking or socks were usually worn with these dresses. A pinafore or apron would be worn over the dresses to help keep them clean. Girls' hair was kept long, with curls and tied with ribbons.Boys' clothing was fashioned on sailor suits, blouses/shirts with a collar and trousers or knickerbockers. Woollen jackets, shirts and ties were suitable attire for older boys. Children's fashion of this time was dictated by long lasting durability, local manufacture, earthy colours and ease of mobility. Colour slide of school boys in white aprons in a school work room where toys are being made. The toys were part of an arrangement with the Department of Education. Schools would produce the toys, often in wood work classes and they were donated to Legacy and Carry On. The toys were given to Junior Legatees at the Government House Christmas Party. Excess toys were passed to a dozen additional charities. The scheme started in 1949 and by 1962 over 8,200 toys were donated, from 201 schools. The total to that date was over 72,500 toys. It appears to be 1963 as there was space for the tally to be completed. Was with many other slides taken in the 1950s and 1960s. The slides have been photographed to make digital images and moved to archive quality sleeves. This photograph shows a Melbourne District Nursing Society (MDNS) Trained nurse, 'Nurse' in the 1890s who is giving care to a patient who has collapsed in the street. It depicts the type of conditions the Nurses faced in that era and the uniform she wore It shows the help the Nurses received from the Police in that era and also the style of uniform worn by the police. In 1885 it was recognized that nursing care was needed for the sick poor in inner Melbourne. The Melbourne District Nursing Society (MDNS) was founded in February of that year, the first District Nursing Society in Australia, and it was decided only Nurses who had attended a Hospital Nurses Training School and were fully qualified would be employed by the Society. In those days even though they were trained they were called 'Nurse'. The Society began with one Nurse, and a second employed six months later, working in the now CBD, ie from Spencer Street to Spring Street and from Victoria Parade to Flinders Street. From its inception the Society was at the forefront of health care and liaised with Doctors. They provided high quality nursing care; educated their patients in the curing and prevention of disease; teaching the importance of cleanliness and good nutrition, both by verbal instruction and demonstration, even supplying soup and milk when needed. At that time they walked the streets and lane ways amid the slums of inner Melbourne carrying their nursing bag containing lotion, ointments, powders, liniment, bandages, dressings, a case of spirits, and the Nurse's own clean apron, soap and small towel. They supplied equipment on loan, such as earthenware hot water bottles, splints, urinals, bed pans, bed cradles, feeding mugs, and air-cushions as well as providing blankets and clean bed linen, and nightdresses as necessary. They provided nursing care to a range of people, often in destitute situations, some lying on rags on the floor as they had no bed, others with just a bed and maybe a thin blanket, a chair and nothing else. Their ages ranged from babes, children, adults to the elderly. The Nurses gave medications as ordered by a Doctor, dressed wounds e.g. to the injured, and surgical cases, and to those with leg ulcers; attended to patients with ‘surgical ailments’ such as ‘hip disease’; gave care to those with acute illnesses such as bronchitis, pleurisy, pneumonia, measles, and scarlet fever, as well as those with chronic illnesses such as consumption (tuberculosis), heart disease, arthritis, cancer, debility, neuritis and paralysis. They educated their patients, and their Carers, in the curing and prevention of disease; teaching the importance of hygiene, cleanliness, ventilation and good nutrition. They taught them, by verbal instruction and demonstration, how to make poultices, to make and apply bandages, apply medical appliances such as splints; and the Nurses supplied milk, beef tea and cooked soup when needed. As the work increased a third Nurse was employed but this was arduous work, particularly in the heat of summer and many Nurses only remained with the Society for several months. This extraordinary record of the student cohort in 1908 reveals many aspects of school life in the early 1900's. The fashions, hair coiffure and accessories and added costuming are fascinating. The sport detail from the basketball hoop is significant. This photograph has social significance because of its detail regarding female school activities in the early 1900s. Three piece skirt, lightly gathered at back, adjoins a 4.5 cm waistband, and bib front which has broad shoulder straps 8.5 cms wide which cross at the back, and button to the waistband, leaving a 10 cm long rounded tab finished end. No buttons evident, which probably suggests removable buttons, fastened with safety pins, or "hair clip" type fasteners. This image shows two of the 'Melbourne District Nursing Society After Care Home' Sisters who worked in the After Care section of the Society during the 1930s. The image was taken on the balcony of the After Care Home at 39 Victoria Parade, Collingwood. It depicts the style of uniforms worn by trained nurses (Sisters) in that era. The Society were pioneers in recognizing the need for premises where patients too ill to be in their own home, but not ill enough to go to hospital, was needed, and the Melbourne District Nursing Society (MDNS) built, then opened, the After-Care Home in 1926, (from 1934 called After-Care Hospital), for these patients, and patients from Melbourne Hospitals who required recuperation before returning to their home. Many children were nursed there, some long term during the Polio epidemic, and the Society employed two School Teachers. The Society now ran two divisions, the After-Care with its own nursing staff and the District division. The Society were the first in Melbourne, in early 1928, to recognize some patients leaving the After-Care, and many at home, needed further social care and they set up ‘Almoners’ from their committee to visit these patients and be intermediaries in getting them social assistance. It was late the following year before the first training of Almoners took place in Melbourne. In 1930 the Society employed a full time kindergarten teacher to visit poor children in their homes. That year the Society were pioneers in opening an Ante-Natal Clinic at the After-Care, setting a high standard with equipment, keeping records and providing leaflets with instructions in how to keep healthy during pregnancy, what complications to look for and what to do when labour commenced. In 1934 the Society were pioneers again when they opened the first Women’s Welfare Clinic in Melbourne giving advice on birth-control, at first attended by their own patients, but then accepting patients from public hospitals until their own clinics were opened. A trained Almoner was employed in 1934 but only stayed twelve months due to the amount of work required. Due to shortage of trained Almoners, a Social Service Officer was employed at the After-Care who successfully gained better housing from the Housing Commission for families living under unsuitable conditions. In the 1950s the Hospital and Charities Commission decided to take over the After-Care Hospital, so the Melbourne District Nursing Society and After-Care Hospital separated and the Melbourne District Nursing Service was formed, setting up Headquarters at 452 St. Kilda Road. The best example of a complete [ca.1900's] uniform of a Alfred Hospital Nursing Student uniformTrainee Nurses Uniform compiled from multiple donations. Mop hat made from organza and grosgrain ribbon,is a reproduction. The dress is a fine herringbone cotton fabric circa 1920. Apron with high round neck [circa 1920] starched cotton, has a repaired tear in the bib, hand darning to tears. Rust mark on right shoulder. 2 starched cuffs with rust marks. Belt starched cotton, Key chain [reproduction] with small metal scissors and 4 keys. Arm band cotton material with full red Maltese cross badge made of felted wool on cotton. The full red cross was worn after the final exam.

Cross section of wharves and steel framed sheds built along the Yarra river between the 1920s and 1960s. The South Melbourne side of the Yarra River is reclaimed swamp land. Without a solid foundation for the construction of the wharves and transit sheds, extended piles were sunk into the mud to support the wharf and shed structures. An example of this design may be found at 5 South Wharf which was built in the 1930s. The transit sheds gave shelter for cargo while waiting to be loaded onto a ship or to be collected by truck after being unloaded from a ship. This building was adjacent to Surrey Lodge, on the corner of Canterbury and Union Roads. The store was established by George Sim in 1885 and in 1889 he set up the 1st Surrey Hills Post Office here. The business was bought by Alfred Claude Geer in 1909; the Camberwell Rate books show that from 1913 Geer remained owner but the business was occupied by Alfred Henry Crump; confirmed by electoral rolls for 1913-1918. Prior to moving to Surrey Hills, Alfred was a grocer in Dandenong. Otto Kuhn was Alfred Crump's store manager and may have taken this photo. Alfred married Hazel May Ordish in 1913 in Dandenong. The marriage notice in the Argus on 5 July indicates that the couple resided at 'Hazeldene' in Leopold Crescent. Moran and Cato had already established a business across Union Road from McNeill's Hotel and in time this business and one other grocery store opposite closed as a result.Black and white photo of A H Crump's grocery and produce store in Canterbury Road, Surrey Hills in 1913. A Vshaped over-lap-13 cm deep at the centre front peak and sewn into the waistband, has a metal angled lodge symbol at the centre front. Samuel Painter, saddler, enlarged George Taylor's premises after buying the building in 1888. He carried on the saddlery while his wife conducted a fancy goods shop. The building on the left was occupied by a bootmaker, Abraham Tracey.Copy of photograph of S. At the front of this complex can be seen two men both wearing work aprons and three children standing on the footpath. Two buggies are pulled up in front of the complex, one four-wheeled, one two wheeled, the smaller vehicle pulled by a pony. The deep gutter is bridged by boards giving access to the unmade road. A fascinating script of a scene in a Pageant by the Intermediate Legacy Club. Each state or city that had a Legacy Club was represented by a performer in costume that displayed some aspect of their city - for example Mildura was represented as Citrus, by wearing a pickers apron. The dialogue is worth reading and the central character is Peace, who welcomes all the Legacy Clubs to the stage. The final line is that "Legacy is Comradeship". A folder of documents about the history of Legacy. Appears to have been mostly compiled by Legatee Cyril Smith as he has many hand written notes on miscellaneous pieces of paper (some are envelopes addressed to him). The notes were typed up into a summary of the History of Legacy. Also documents relating to the first time Legacy approached the public for donations in September 1956, including newspaper articles that were reprinted, a schedule of information that was approved to be released to the press, and a list of potential donors that was circulated to Legatees in the hope they could contact the ones they knew personally or professionally. The call for public donations was partially due to the purchase of the Dureau building and the need to modify the building for Legacy's needs. The documents from this folder have been added in seperate records (see 01262 to 01281). The folder was part of an attempt to capture history of Legacy, generally from the 1950s.The documents provide an insight into the working of Legacy, especially in the 1950s. James Reid was born in Scotland near Glasgow and came to Victoria as a young man in 1854. Shortly after arriving he came to Bacchus Marsh where he lived until his death in 1902 at the age of 74 years. For most of these years he conducted a wheelwrights and coach builders business in Bacchus Marsh. In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, wheelwrights and blacksmiths played an essential role in the functioning of the whole community. Before the industrialisation of manufacturing, wheels and other components of vehicles for transport, all metal objects, including farm implements, building requirements and domestic utensils were made by hand. As mechanisation of industry increased, the smith commonly performed the role of farrier in the times when horse power was pivotal to all aspects of society. Complementing this work, the forge was often allied with a wheelwright's shop. These premises also acted as a meeting place for the men of the town, where news was shared and friendships forged.Small sepia 'carte de viste' style unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. Originated in the United Kingdom in 1822 with a motto "No man Is At All Times Wise" and a maxim of "Justice, Truth and Philanthropy". A branch of the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes was formed at Bogong by Grand Lodge Officers from Melbourne and other members. The ceremony was held at Lewis Camp Mess (Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme) with a world record of 78 new members initiated and a world record of over 100 pounds was raised. Another branch, No. 150 was opened in Mt Beauty. The Bogong and Mt Beauty lodges combined in 1948 and organised a Christmas treat for all children of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria working on the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme.Historical: The Bogong R.A.O.B. was formed circa Sept. 1946 and the Mt Beauty R.A.O.B. in 1948. It was a popular organisation in Bogong and then in Mt Beauty during the construction of the K.H.E.S. This club shows how important social clubs were in making up part of the community thus making it socially historic as well. It was a voluntary charitable organisation with a complicated ceremonial tradition and enjoyed by its participants. The donor, Brian William John Bourke was a cook at the pub and other places around the town. He had lived in the area since the 1950s and passed away 2019 and is buried at Tawonga Cemetery.Small brown leather case with attached handle and sliding clips on each side. The corners are reinforced with steel.The hinge appears to be stitched on and is held by an attached leather strap on the right side. Inside: the lid has a material open gathered pocket holding 4 small books and 4 thin booklets / papers. The case holds 2 large leather red and gold cuffs, 1 red with gold decoration apron, 1 red ribboned necklace with a personal badge and 1 of the lodge and 2 short ribbons (one green and 1 blue) with badges attached including the Mt Beauty badge on horns. 1 cardboard roll with B W J Bourke / Mt Beauty on the outside and 4 certificates rolled inside. These are dated 1964, 1970, 1974, 1974 . The building in this image was built by J. I. Murray for use as a Bank premises. The National Bank of Australasia opened a branch in the building in 1862 and remained there until 1865. The Colonial Bank of Australasia then occupied the building from 1865 until 1872. At the time this image was taken in 1883 the building was in use as a shop, although a sign saying 'National Bank of Australasia' could still be seen on the building. Goods for sale can clearly be seen in the windows and the photographers’ wagon or cart can be partly seen to the right of the picture. At a later stage the building became part of the Royal Hotel which can be seen to the right of the building. The small building to the left of the picture was used as a printing office by the West Bourke and South Grant Guardian newspaper between 1865 and 1872.Small sepia unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. Goods for sale can be seen in the windows but there is no signage on the building to indicate what type of shop it is. A sign across the upper facade reads 'Colonial Bank of Australasia' but this bank had vacated this location by 1872. Three women and a man can be seen standing in front of the shop. Two of the women appear to be shaking hands. The woman standing in the doorway is wearing an apron and may be the shop owner or assistant. Just visible at the edge of the photo can be seen a buggy with advertisements on the back and side. Letters that can be distinguished suggest that in all probability this is the carriage used by Stevenson and McNicoll, Photographers, on their trips around rural towns and countryside.
