One photo from an album belonging to JB McLean, of his voyage home from World War 1 in 1920 on the Ceramic. The photo shows the Kantara Military Camp in Egypt showing canvas tents. The Ceramic departed Tillbury, UK 12th March and docked in Freemantle on 27th April 1920 and then went onto Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney. The Ceramic was a transport vessel built in Belfast in 1913 for the White Star Line to transport frozen produce and apples from Australia to UK. It was taken over by the Australian Government for troop transport in October 1914 and could carry over 3,000 troops. This trip in 1920 there were 1467 on board, there were women and children as well as 439 soldiers returning home, one of whom was John 'Basil' McLean. Was with other World War 1 memorabilia that has come from Private John Basil McLean, 2nd Reinforcements, 37th Battalion, A.I.F. There was a large collection of postcards so he may have been collecting them as souvenirs. J.B. McLean (Service No. 13824) was from near Maffra, Victoria and enlisted on 22 January 1916. He embarked on 16 December 1916 for Europe. His full war record is available from AWM. He spent time with the Australian Field Artillery (Pack Section). Letter, To Robert Bowring from Rob C. Allison, 2000
A file copy of a letter sent from Legatee Rob Allison to Robert Bowring (6th November 2000) in answer to a request regarding the origins of the first Dawn Service. Legatee Rob Allison signed himself as the Chairman, Advisory Tradition and History Committee. To research his response he consulted the AWM and summarised the content in the letter and enclosed four articles. Unfortunately the four articles sent to Robert Bowring are not included here. L/- Rob Allison makes reference to information obtained from Dr Richard Reid (historian at the Australian War Memorial and then the Commonwealth Branch of the Department of Veterans Affairs). Also Rob Allison makes reference to Lyn Witheridge (Australian War Memorial and later with the Centenary Federation Secretariat). He was addressing the rumour that there was a Dawn Service held in Albany WA in 1914 when the first convoy in WW1 from Australia was about to sail from Albany. The letter also makes reference to a gathering at Toowoomba QLD on Anzac morning 1919, however that rumour suggest that flowers were placed on returned soldiers graves, L/- Allison cast doubt about the placing of flowers on graves of returned service personnel, because only Major General Bridges and the Australian Unknown Soldier were the only two WW1 troops killed in action, to be returned to Australia.A record that members of the public approached Legacy with questions about military and post war history. Legatee Allison made an effort to research and base his reply on evidence.White paper with black type, a facsimile of a letterTelephone No 61395620309 top right.research, world war one -

Flag, French Flag
A French flag that was flown in Rouen, France on Armistice Day in 1918. The note says it was donated to Legacy by Matron H. E. Tait RRC. There are no details how she came to have the flag or why she gave it to Melbourne Legacy. From the AWM Matron HE Tait is Helen Elizabeth Tait, from Maffra who had trained at the Alfred Hospital and joined the Australian Army Nursing Service. She was awarded the Royal Red Cross (2nd Class) for her service in World War One. Her full record is available from the National Archive of Australia. It shows she was serving at the 1st Australian General Hospital in Rouen in November of 1918 when the war ended. RRC is The Royal Red Cross (RRC) which is a military decoration awarded in the United Kingdom and Commonwealth for exceptional services in military nursing. After the war she returned to Melbourne and was Matron of Melbourne Grammar School. She never married and died in 1976.The founding Legatees all fought in World War One and momentos like this flag would have been appreciated by them.A French flag from World War One.Note with the flag is typed and says ' French Flag which floated over the Town Hall in Rouen on Armistice Day November 11th 1918. The Mrs Aeneas Gunn Memorial Library
Book, Australian War Memorial, Active service : with Australia in the Middle East, 1941
This is an illustrated notebook on the life of Australians in the Middle East theatre of war. Almost all of the contents are the works of men on active service. Reports are included on most of the actions in which Australian forces have so far taken part. It has been possible to include in these reports much detail which hitherto been available to the public. Similarly among the photographs, there are some which have already been published and many which now emerge from military and other official coerces for the first time. They have been selected primarily for their value as graphic records of fact. It is hoped that the result, in text and photography, may be a more intimate if still fragmentary understanding of the campaigns. The balance and perspective of true history canon yet be bought to bear on events.Ill, p.129.non-fictionThis is an illustrated notebook on the life of Australians in the Middle East theatre of war.
