Functional object - Baby Max Camera, Tougodo, 1950s
The Baby-Max is a Japanese subminiature camera popular in the 1950s and 1960s. It was often sold in a pack containing the camera, case and boxes of Kikufilm Panchromatic, a film specialised for toy cameras. Each film took ten 14x14mm images on 17.5mm paper backed roll. It was manufactured by Tougodo, a Japanese camera maker, active from 1930 to the early 1960s. The film with this camera has an expiry date of November 1962.This item is significant due to its popularity in the 1950s and demonstration of the evolution of camera technology.The Baby-Max is a Japanese subminiature camera. It has an elongated body with polygonal ends. The viewfinder is integrated in the top casing. There is a knob on the photographer's right to roll the film and there is a small fake knob on the left. The back is hinged to the right and locked by a sliding bar on the left. It contains a single uncovered window in the middle. The lens has a fixed focus and aperture, and has no markings. There is a lever to operate the shutter. The case is of brown faux leather. This is a pocket spring balance. It would have been used last century in our district by market gardeners, hawkers and other itinerant workers and possibly also used in some small businesses. In households it could also be useful for weighing jam fruit, vegetables etc. Spring balances are still in use today.This item is retained as an example of a spring balance manufactured 80 or more years ago.This is a set of spring balance scales. The spring is fixed at one end with a hook attached to hold an object to be weighed. The top end has a ring to hang the scales up. The spring mechanism is enclosed by a steel cover. The front scale face is made of brass and both this face and the rear spring casing are fastened by three rivets. On the front is a spring-loaded blade which has equally spaced scale markings next to it on one side. Clothing - CAMISOLE, Late 1800s
White camisole with round neckline with 4 cm deep fine woven lace. Neckline is shaped into six sided effect. Short sleeves edged with the same lace. There are four pearl buttons behind a concealed front opening. Two groups of three pintucks are on either side of the centre front. There is an 8 cm deep peplum and a casing with a cotton drawstring tape to define the waistline. Clothing - WHITE COTTON WAIST PETTICOAT, 1960's
White cotton lawn, three tier waist petticoat. Elastic in casing at waistline. Second tier, also of white lawn fabric is gathered at the seamline. The seam is then covered by white cotton tape, machine stitched over the seam, to neaten the join. Clothing - WHITE COTTON CAMISOLE WITH CROCHET LACE TRIM, Early 1900's
Wide square neckline, and square yoke of crochet extending into short crocheted sleeves. A seven cm deep peplum has a cotton casing and cotton tape drawstring. The front opening has three hand-stitched button holes, and two pearl shell buttons( third is missing). Rows of 1.5cm cotton lace run horizontally at top and bottom of yoke, with three rows - one at each edge, and one in centre of sleeves. Wide neckline, rounded at the back, and a deep V shaped front. Short sleeves, edged with a one cm band of scalloped edge lace. This edging also trims the back neckline. Front neckline is trimmed with six cm deep scalloped edge, broiderie anglaise, featuring an embroidered floral design, and cutwork. A casing at the waistline, one cm wide, appears to contain elastic, which is now perished.
