John Kendrick Blogg was a woodcarver and furniture maker who lived and worked in Surrey Hills in the early 1900s. He is particularly well-known for his WW1 memorials and honour boards, the most significant of which is The Shrine in the Surrey Gardens. Others are found at Surrey Hills Primary School and in local churches. There is also one in this collection. It was made for the Surrey Hills Bowling Club, of which Blogg was a keen member. It came to the collection when the club closed in the mid-1990s. Blogg was also known for his poetry. He wrote many poems about roses, WW1 and Surrey Hills. Catalogue card reads, "Jamboree Athletic Meeting held at Ringwood, 8th January 1949. The carnival was historic in that for the first time in the annals of Ringwood, a liquor booth operated at the grounds and bookmakers laid the odds". An addition note on the back of the photograph reads, "The Bookies and the Booth. The bookmakers are apparently a law unto themselves. The Council had refused permission for the bookmakers to operate on the reserve, but here they are."
