From the estate of Elsie Cooke who was the Orbost librarian for many years before 1940's. Elsie Cooke lived all her life in Gippsland,. She was born at Brodribb in 1895 and died in 1970, Elsie Cooke lived at Bruthen for a short time and, in 1937, moved to live with her aunt, Miss Jean Munro. Miss Cooke was Librarian at the Mechanics Institute for many years. Kindness and consideration for other were Miss Cooke’s attributes and she endeared herself to all who knew her. She was a loyal member of the Presbyterian Church and a stalwart of the Ladies’ Guild, an energetic worker for the Municipal Auxiliary and a member of the Red Cross. (ref. Mary Gilbert) Elsie Cooke was a well-respected Orbost identity. As gold is one of the heaviest metals one way to forge a sovereign in brass would be to make it slightly larger to make up the weight. This coin is a Warrnambool Bateman penny. It is an example of an Australian token – a coin that had the value of a penny and was produced by businessmen in the 1850s to be used only in the business of the person named on the coin. There were two firms in Warrnambool that produced tokens in the 1850s – William Jamieson, a general storekeeper and William Bateman. The latter had a general store in Banyan Street and became in the early 1850s one of the largest merchant firms in the Warrnambool district. But the firm’s liabilities were financed by overdrafts and insolvency resulted. A disastrous and suspicious fire in 1856 destroyed the Bateman store and caused a great number of insolvencies in the district as so many businessmen and farmers were financed by Bateman who eventually left the district. This token is of supreme importance. It is significant for three reasons: 1. It is an example of an 1850s Australian token, demonstrating an early business practice in our history. 2. It is an example of a Warrnambool token produced by an important Warrnambool business (only two firms in Warrnambool produced tokens) 3. It is a Bateman token and these are comparatively rare because many Bateman tokens were destroyed in the 1856 fire. This is an 1855 metal token with, on one side, an image of a woman holding scales in one hand and a cornucopia in the other (Dea Pecunia?). The obverse side has the name of William Bateman Junior of Warrnambool. Square hinged box inscribed on lid 'Anzac Commemoration 1926'. The box is covered with a thin, black leather-like material. The box is lined with cloth. The lower section of the box is lined with a mid-blue cloth which is imprinted, in silver, with the map of Australia in which five English farthings have been set. The coins are in the formation of the Southern Cross with a silver star shape around each farthing. The underside of the box lid has dark blue gathered satin lining. The coins are in uncirculated condition and are loose. The box is damaged.The box is inscibed in gold lettering with the following: "Anzac Commemoration 1926"

One-pound note, one of a set of four (4) notes published by The Bank of Australasia, Sydney, New South Wales. The obverse of the note is printed in black ink with the denomination and its round pound-coin symbol printed in green ink. There is no printing on the reverse. A black ink stamp is impressed twice on each side of the note, stating that the note is cancelled. Handwritten red ink text is on the note's obverse and pencil text on the reverse. A unique Serial number is printed twice on the obverse. The banknote has a rectangular cut-out notch on the lower edge. The Bank of Australasia was established under the Royal Charter of England. It first came to Australia in 1835, opening in Sydney. The Bank of Australasia was the first bank in Warrnambool. It was established in 1854 and operated from leased buildings in Merri Street then Timor Street. The bank opened its own building on May 21, 1860, on the north-east corner of Timor and Kepler Streets. In that year, the Acting Superintendent of the Bank of Australasia in Sydney was David Charters McArthur. He went on to become the Superintendent 1867-1876. In 1951 the Bank of Australasia amalgamated with the Union Bank to form the Australia and New Zealand Bank, now known as the ANZ. Then in 1970 the ANZ merged with both the ES&A and the London Bank of Australia to form the ANZ Banking Group Limited. The ANZ Banking Group Ltd kindly donated a variety of historic items from the Bank of Australasia. This set of banknotes has historical significance as it was issued by the Bank of Australasia. The Bank of Australasia was the first bank in Warrnambool, established in 1854. The bank continued to operate until its merger in 1951 when it became the ANZ Bank, which is still in operation today. The Bank was an integral part of the establishment and growth of commerce in Colonial Warrnambool and throughout Australia.
