This is an early European history of the region that saw the population of the Kurnai tribes plummet from 3000 to less than 300 in twenty years. The Stony Creek Trestle Bridge was built in 1916 when the existing rail line from Melbourne to Bairnsdale was extended to Orbost. This 97km Bairnsdale to Orbost extension through rugged terrain was reputed to have been the most difficult rail project undertaken in Victoria. In service for over 60 years the bridge was damaged by bushfire in 1980, with the last train crossing in 1987. At 247m long and 20m high, it is the largest standing bridge of its kind in the State, and is listed on the Register of Historic Sites. Built of red ironbark and grey box timber, it is a fine example of the early engineering skills that utilised the resources and materials found on site. The association was formed as a means of giving Marlo residents a voice with the then Orbost Shire Council. It has continued as the Marlo Ratepayers & Residents association.This is associated with the history of Marlo which is a small town which has a close association with Orbost. Marlo sits at the mouth of the Snowy River and was the port for Orbost. It came under the Orbost Shire Council. This fence post is from the original Snowy River Station stock yards which were where "Merindah" stands today. It was probably owned by the Marshall family at the time of transfer to "Merindah" in 1985. It was lifted out by Geoff Stevenson with a bucket on a tractor in 1986. The post was originally twice the length. The Snowy River Station was established in 1842 by Peter Imlay. In 1845 the land was sold to Norman MCLeod who named the area Orbost. After financial difficulties in the 1870's the run was taken over by W.J.Clarke and known as Orbost Station.Peter Imlay established the first white settlement in 1842 settling on the eastern side of the Snowy River where the township of Orbost now stands. This settlement was the Snowy River Station. A corner post from a post and rail fence. It is possibly made of red box.. On one side are three rectangular sections cut out with a similar one on the other sides. The post is hollow and has metal staples in the sides for attaching wires.orbost-station mcleod fence-post

The original slab hut was built in 1872 as a family dwelling on a site about 3 km upstream from the junction of the Buchan and Snowy Rivers about 40 kms from Orbost on the Yalmy Rd. No nails were used in the construction; it was all wired together. After a period in storage the Slab Ht was opened in its present location in Orbost as the Information Centre in 1987. This cart came from Sederlan's Bakery - Newmerella and Orbost. It had been used outside the premises as advertising. The original chassis had been added to extensively with shafts, wheels and tyres added. This axle appears to have part of the cart - either a baker's or butcher's cart. The original cart may have been a butcher's or baker's cart.A wooden two-wheeled cart painted cream. It has a wooden ply top and is fully enclosed. The chassis seems to be original with the rest having been re-constructed from non-original materials. This pole chair was probably made as a display item for the Slab Hut (Orbost Visitor Information Centre).A triangular shaped three-legged pole chair. The chair seat is made from a hessian potato sack - Packed by McDougals of Neerim Vic. The sack is attached by wire. The frame of the chair appears to be made from one solid piece of wood. It is dark brown in colour and has a cross piece at the front and a small strengthening piece on the backm leg.furniture chair
