James Sullivan was a Lieutenant in the Australian Army in WW2, and a casualty from the conflict in New Guinea. Medically unfit for active service he was posted to Camp 4 Internment Camp as a member of the Garrison. This painting is for the Museum. It was a gift to me by an ex prisoner, whom I met when he came to Melbourne with Vic, Nicky and others. His name is Luigi Poggioli and he was a most distinguished gentleman, so distinct and well educated that I still remember him clearly (and I do not have a good memory). Perhaps I remember so well because of his kind words in verse on the painting which read :(Translation) "Ungrateful land with handsome race of Italian blood who with their hard work enriched you". Yes I believe I remember so well because of this verse. Extract from a letter from Mrs Tolaini now living in London. She is the Wife of Vittorio Tolaini who was on the Dunera and wrote of his experiences in "Voyage of an Alien" June 1991. Photos of the opening ceremony at the Tatura Museum, in conjunction with 50th Anniversary, of the Temple Society in Australia. Sister Beatrice Moore nursed at Camp 3 during WW2 and was invited by Tatura and District Historical Society to officially open their new buildings and display on POW and Internment Camps, on 22 September 1991. One item about these unidentified drawings 1/ Jenny Ling wrote ‘Dunera Boys Hunt’ article in Caulfield Port Phillip Leader of 08/09/2011. Melbourne Tour guide Shelley Cohney (of Caulfield North) is trying to track down the subjects of a series of 28 pencil portraits of ‘Dunera Boys’ and asks for assistance.
