Men (four) wear dinner suits (white ties and tails) and are holding monkey masks to resemble the :Monkey Brand: appliance cleaning product they are advertising or using in a theatrical performance. The four women wear black, knee length dresses and are dressed as maids, with white 1/2 length aprons and white caps. They have the 'Monkey Brand' advertisement pinned onto their aprons and are holding another cardboard ad. (the same one) suspended from a block. Four clean saucepans on floor at men's feet. This photograph was taken of the debutantes and their partners presented at the annual debutante ball held at St Kilda Town Hall. This photograph is significant for its links to the Chinese Young League. The League was formally established on 4 October 1932 to to promote free social intercourse and goodwill among its members and their mutual improvement. Membership was open to all persons, with one or both parents or grandparents born in China. Wives of Chinese members were permitted as members with the same privileges. It was a significant social organisation for Chinese-Australians in Melbourne in the mid to late twentieth century.Black and white photograph (vintage) with cream frame under glass. Gertrude Kathleen Barry was a music teacher, performer, and director of many musical productions in Linton and district, playing and teaching both piano and violin. She was the youngest of five daughters of Linton policeman/Clerk of Courts Denis Barry and his wife Ellen (née Quirk). The Barry family lived in a house they called "Listowel", which was in Cumberland Street, almost opposite the Catholic Church. As a pupil of the Sisters of Mercy in Ballarat, Gertrude passed the Musical Society of Victoria pianoforte examination in 1900. She became a music teacher shortly afterwards, teaching both privately and assisting in the music programme at Linton State School. She is first listed as a music teacher in music examination results published in 1906, and it is understood that she ran a private music school with her sister Dora from around this time until about 1915. Gertrude Barry moved to Ballarat in 1925, and was still listed as a music teacher in electoral records in 1972. She died in 1976. Orbost HES supplied post-primary education in the district until a high school was built in 1948.Orbost High School / Orbost Secondary College has played a significant part in the education of senior students in the Orbost district . It is the sole senior educational institution. This photograph is representative of its history.A black / white photograph of children in front of a timber building with an open door. One female and two adult male teachers are with the children. At the front centre is a drum. Behind the drum is a boy holding a board with H.E.S. Orbost hand-written in what appears to be white chalk on a blackboard. There are three smaller boys holding brass musical instruments. Victorian Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (VIOSH) Australia is the Asia-Pacific centre for teaching and research in occupational health and safety (OHS) and is known as one of Australia's leaders on the field. VIOSH has a global reputation for its innovative approach within the field of OHS management. VIOSH had its first intake of students in 1979. At that time the Institution was known as the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. In 1990 it became known as Ballarat University College, then in 1994 as University of Ballarat. It was 2014 that it became Federation University. VIOSH Australia students are safety managers, senior advisors and experienced OHS professionals. They come from all over Australia and industry. Students are taught active research and enquiry; rather than textbook learning and a one-size fits all approach. VIOSH accepts people into the Graduate Diploma of Occupational Hazard Management who have no undergraduate degree - on the basis of extensive work experience and knowledge. The dinner was held on 14 April 1951 in the former Ballarat Technical School (currently the Gribble Building on the SMB Campus of Federation University) .1) Twelve men pose for a photograph. This photograph was taken on the first 'Australia Day', held 30 July 1915. Across Australia, this day was set aside for a nation-wide fundraising effort for the Patriotic Relief Fund, raising money to assist wounded soldiers returning to Australia during WWI. Other days had been set aside to raise funds for specific nations, e.g. 'Belgian Day' had been held earlier in 1915.. In Linton Australia Day 1915 was celebrated with a jumble sale, raffles, and collection of donations. There was also a stall near the Shire Offices, attended by a group of girls dressed as Red Cross nurses, which sold flowers, postcards, toys etc. People identified in photograph: Standing slightly behind the group - Mr Smith (Alf J. Smith, Grenville Shire Secretary). L-R, standing: Kathleen Nicol, Violet Smith, Jean Gascoigne, Elva Ball, Miss Barry, Millie Todd, Effie Gascoigne, Stella Todd, unnamed. L-R, seated - Stella Ralf (spelled Ralph), Rita Morgan, three girls in centre are unnamed, Daisy Smith. The girls were pupils of the Misses Barry, who were assisted in costuming the girls by Mrs A. In 1966 E.J.T. Tippett, President of the Ballarat School of Mines Council was on the interim council and committee member of the Victorian Institute of Colleges.Foolscap typed Victorian Institute of Colleges (VIC) minutes .1) Minutes of the inaugural meeting of the Victorian Institute of College held at the State Electricity Commission of Victoria, 15-23 William Street, Melbourne on 26 June 1967. This meeting followed 25 meetings of the Interim Council. The Council included E.J. Barker of the Ballarat School of Mines, representing principals of affiliated colleges outside the metropolitan area. .2) Building Committee minutes of the Victoria Institute of Colleges, 11 April 1969. These minutes mention Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education including the request for approval to purchase recording double beam spectrophotometer, Logic panel for Hitachi 505 analog computer and Nuclear-magneto-resonance gaussmeter system). The also requested approval to appoint L.H. Vernon and Associates and G.J. Harrison as joint campus planners, and outlined how water would be supplied to the Mount Helen site. The minutes outline a request for State.Commonwealth approval to purchase a concrete testing machine and an Hydraulic Flow Channel for Yallourn Technical College. The request was moved by E.J. Barker of the Ballarat School of Mines. .3) 'Colleges of Advanced Education - The Vision and the Reality' an address delivered at the Diploma Conferring Ceremony, Yallourn Technical College by R.E. Parry, registrar of the Victoria Institute of Colleges on Friday 18 April 1960. .4) Minutes of the Victoria Institute of Colleges Buildings Committee minutes, 8 November 1968. Victorian Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (VIOSH) Australia is the Asia-Pacific centre for teaching and research in occupational health and safety (OHS) and is known as one of Australia's leaders in the field. VIOSH has a global reputation for its innovative approach within the field of OHS management. VIOSH had its first intake of students in 1979. At that time the Institution was known as the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. In 1990 it became known as Ballarat University College, then in 1994 as University of Ballarat. It was 2014 that it became Federation University. VIOSH Australia students are safety managers, senior advisors and experienced OHS professionals. They come from all over Australia and industry.. Students are taught active research and enquiry; rather than textbook learning and a one-size fits all approach. VIOSH accepts people into the Graduate Diploma of Occupational Hazard Management who have no undergraduate degree - on the basis of extensive work experience and knowledge. Prepared by a team of multidisciplinary staff at Ballarat College of Advanced Education, a proposal for a Training Course in Factory Inspection for the Government of India under the Australian Aid Program was submitted for approval. The Organisation, Approach and Team information was fully outlined. Full information was provided on each member of the Staff taking the proposed course. Cost estimates given for funding purposes.
