Printed in green ink on off white card, featuring the name of the organisation with the word "limited" hand stamped on, membership number, signature space and a side on image of No. 14. Date hand stamped on in green ink and membership number stamped in black ink. Card made out to Mrs. C. Dean, No. 192 in handwriting and signed by Carolyn Dean. 3269.2 - ditto, but with membership No. 42 - the correct ones! 3269.3 - ditto for the year ended 30th June 1977. "Limited" in black ink and other details typed on. 3269.4 - ditto for period to 14-7-1976 for Warren Doubleday, given number 005, which was later revised - card added 4-1-2014. 3269.5 - as for .4, but with revised Membership Number. Demonstrates aspects of the Ballarat Tramways fare system at the time of the one man trams, tokens which could be pre purchased by travellers and save time when boarding trams. See notes on file re these eg Reg Item 1801.Fare token- 2d - 21mm diameter - green celluloid - with "B.E.T." in large capitals on front centre of token and words "Ballarat Electric Tramways 1913" on circumference. On reverse in large font "2" and a small font "D" at top of the two - indicating token had a value of two pence. Extract from A. Bradley "The Golden City and its Tramways" about tokens and why. "The ESCo worked out its procedures from its own experience. A "pay as you enter" system was used on city-bound cars, and a "pay as you leave" system on outward-bound cars. On Sundays during busy periods this was reversed on the Gardens lines, but conductors were still required on this line to cope with the heavy summer holiday traffic. Trams 1 to 18 were altered by altering the end seating, placing gates on doorways and "pay as you enter" and "pay as you leave" signs. Once on board, passengers paid their coins into a farebox mounted behind the driver, which was fitted with glass windows and mirrors to enable the driver to see the coins slide into the box - a form of "moral check on passengers". Regular passengers could buy pink or green celluloid tokens at a discount price, to save the motorman having to issue tickets and give change." Winnifred Gardiner Davies, 1875-1973, married Mr Jones.Silver card case and notebook, etched and decorated with fern leaves and an engraved inscription. The case has royal blue pockets with gold edging, celluloid index pages with a list of handwritten names and a silver propelling pencil is secured at the side. This card together with a log book was a vital record of service for any seaman serving on a Merchant vessel that had been commandeered for War transport work and needed to be validated to ensure eligibility to be taken on as qualified member of the crew. G.W. Duncan appears to have specialised in engine room and mechanical maintenance. He appears to have served aboard a number of vessels including merchant vessels commissioned into wartime service in WW2.Mariner Duncan had a particular regard for the Mission to Seafarers. This plate for display on a commissioned new table at the MTSV chapel acknowledges his bequest and the material donated. Collectively the G W Duncan material includes: photographs, professional data memorabilia and written and commercially printed resources.
