Album, Marion Tilley, "Q" Theatre Guild Scrapbook, 1957-71
This scrapbook of annotated programmes, and newspaper reviews was assembled by Marion Tilley, wardrobe mistress for, and performer in, productions by the Kew Light Opera Company and the "Q" Theatre Guild. It is significant as a remarkably complete document of theatre performances in Kew, Victoria during the 1950s and 1960s. The scrapbook, and the items individually catalogued within it, have artistic and aesthetic significance within the history of performing arts in Victoria in the middle of the 20th Century. They have social significance in that they reveal socio-cultural values and preoccupations during the period. The records also act as a history of arts activities in the Kew Recreation Hall and later in the Kew City Hall as entertainment and community arts and music precincts.Scrapbook of newspaper reviews, correspondence and programmes of the "Q" Theatre Guild. The scrapbook covers items from the years 1957 to 1971. The scrapbook was compiled by Marion Tilley, Wardrobe Mistress. The scrapbook has over time lost its binding so the pages are loose-leafed. Photo, Henry Jamieson in his shop at 149 Union Road, Surrey Hills
Henry was a familiar persona in Union Road and around the Surrey Hills Neighbourhood Centre for decades. He lived all his life within 3 kilometres of his radio shop. Son of Catherine and ‘Mick’ Jamieson, Henry was born in 1927 in View Street, Surrey Hills and was educated at Box Hill Grammar School. His father died when he was young and Henry took a job as a technical assistant with the Commonwealth Film Unit. Film was a life-long interest and he became a longstanding member of CATHS (Cinema and Theatre Historical Society of Victoria). Henry also had a profound love of music which was reflected in his work and hobbies. He joined Adrian Knowles, who had started his radio shop at 149 Union Road in the 1940s, and trained at RMIT as a radio tradesman. In time Henry took over the business. When 3MBS established in Kew, Henry was an enthusiastic supporter and volunteer. For some years Henry and a co-producer presented a prime time Saturday evening programme 'Bach to Bernstein'; later his distinctive voice could be heard in the early morning time slot, 'Daybreak'. Henry was also a staunch supporter of the Surrey Hills Historical Society and served as its President for a number of years. Henry died in 2011. Melbourne Legacy
Photograph, Speaking Contest 1993, 1993
From 1988 to 2021, Legacy held a public speaking contest for young secondary school students. It was initially called the Junior Plain English Speaking Award (JPESA) and later called Legacy Junior Public Speaking Award (LJPSA). Schools were eligible to send along up to 4 representatives to compete in a preliminary round. Participants gave a four minute prepared speech and a two minute impromptu response to a topic. In 1993 the topic was "Music - a distraction to study". President John Stevenson is shown on the far left of the photo with John Straney of the Norwich Group, congratulating the winner, Susie Dowling of Strathmore Secondary College and the runner up, Zayne D'Crus of Mazenod College. The guest speaker in 1993 was the Herald Sun Journalist Keith Dunstan. The following was taken from a programme in 1996: "The Award aim is to promote enhanced oral communication skills for 12-14 year old students and to help young people appreciate the ideals of Legacy - voluntary service, caring and comradeship - and the need for remembrance. It began in 1988 in the Melbourne area with the support of the Ministry of Education and The Plain English Foundation. Entries have grown from 24 in the 1988 competition to over 300 in schools across the Stat, plus greater numbers participating in the process of selecting four contestants from each school. In 1995, a successful Interstate Championship was held with contestants from Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. On 11 November 1996 the first National final was held with contestants from six states."A record of a Junior Plain Speaking contest that was run by Legacy from 1988 to the 1990s.Black and white photo x 4 of Junior Plain Speaking contest in 1993 and white paper label and an article in the Answer.legacy promotion, speaking contest, answer, jpesa -
