Given to Nell (Helen) Mitchell, daughter of Charlie Mitchell, and her husband John Macpherson Smith as a wedding gift from he emloyees of Cave Hill, Lilydale 19 June 1935.Historic significance related to Cave Hill Quarry, a major enterprise in Lilydale which has existed since the mid 1800s and was founded by David Mitchell, father of Dame Nellie Melba (opera singer). Cave Hill Quarry was a major employer in the area. The Museum also holds a humidifier made by the engineer at Cave Hill Quarry for Dame Nellie Melba as a gift. Significance also related to David Mitchell and Dame Nellie Melba and Mitchell family. Nell Mitchell was David Mitchell's grand-daughter and Nellie Melba's niece (Charlie Mitchell Melba's brother)..1 Electroplated nickel silver teapot with wicker handle. Correspondence between Aaron Beattie Esq from Beattie Physical Culture College Melbourne and E. Hilmer Smith Esq about Girls’ Physical Culture Classes in July 1928. It was intended to aid the Sydney Legacy Club establish classes for girls. Excerpts include the following information: "I would suggest that you form a special C/tee to handle the Physical Culture work. . . . I would suggest that special care be taken to see that none but fully-qualified and trained teachers handle the children - this is all important. . . . We charge every child 5/- per year, payable quarterly. We have been most fortunate here with the girls section. An old friend of mine - Mrs Gillies - is our Hon. Directress. She was - until her marriage - in charge of all Physical Culture training in the State Schools of Victoria, and is a wonderful woman. She takes complete charge, appoints her own staff and so on. We pay some of her assistants from £2.2.0 to £5.5.0 per term of 12 weeks. The class was formed in May last year with 42 girls - we now have 121, and they have left the boys far behind. Enclosed you will find a copy of our measurement chart, which is an important part - every child should be recorded before starting, and again at the end of the year. I am also sending you a copy of our Demonstration Programme. This show was given after the girls had been going for 10 months, and it was a wonderful success - all these things help to bring success, and children seem to want these things to keep them going. . . . We spend about £600 per year on our Children's Work and nearly all of that goes to the Physical Culture side." The correspondence is a good snapshot of the undertaking of Melbourne Legacy running girls' club at that point in time and that Melbourne Legacy was trying to help Sydney Legacy establish a similar program. Yields information about the change over from horse to electric trams and a comparison between the two types of trams, uniforms and clothing of passengers and the way destinations were shown.Black and White photograph, assumed a copy photograph of ESCo 16 and a horse tram - at Rubicon St where Sebastopol passengers transferred between horse and electric transport. No. 16 has two uniformed men at the front and a conductor on the rear stop, two children on the front seat and a lady on the rear. A uniformed horse tram driver is standing by the front of the horse. No. 16 has the destination of Grenville St, and a large sign "Sebastopol & Rubicon St Tramways via Drummond St". The destination is on the roof of the tram, possibly indicating early 1907 - 08. Used in The Golden City and its Tramways - page 42. Text notes the photograph was donated by a Mrs. I Butler. A black and white photo three men wearing aprons at a beach camp kitchen. The names on the back say it is Norm Smith, Max Allan and Ewan Graham. It is likely to be Somers Camp with a type of camp kitchen behind the men. In the early years of Legacy organised outings to the property of Legacy founder, Legatee Stan Savige, who had a place in Balnarring close to the beach. Permanent camp buildings were built in 1930, and with an association with Lord Somers (Governor of Victoria) it was called Somers Camp. He was elected Councillor of the Shire of Moorabbin and, with Mary Ann, his family were involved with local Church, Red Cross, and other community organizations. According to Wikipedia Stan Savige unsuccessfully "ran for the Victorian Legislative Assembly Electoral district of Caulfield on the Nationalist Party of Australia ticket" in 1930. (source: Wikipedia). The photo also shows Stan's mother and his daughter Gwen, as well as Legatees Syd Birrell, Norm Smith and Herb Greenway as marked by pen notations in the border. The photo is part of a photo album of Comradeship activities (from 1930 to 1977) see items from 01027 to 01036.A record of Stan Savige standing for election in the Caulfield elections in 1930. The Comradeship photo album was put together by the Comradeship committee and records events that Legatees did and places they lived or visited. Some appear to be trips to visit other Legatees living overseas and social occasions held in different places.
