He became Shire President ...David Mitchell was born near the town of Forfar, Scotland, became an apprentice to a stone mason and builder, then emigrated to Australia in 1853. In Melbourne, he set up a builder's yard in Burnley St, Richmond and later bought Cave Hill Limestone Quarries in Lilydale and manufactured the cement in Richmond. He became Shire President for Lillydale in 1883. Also he established a brickworks in Burnley St, Richmond. He was responsible for building PLC College in East Melbourne, Menzies Hotel, The Exhibition building and Scots Church. Although he was very wealthy in his own right, he is also known as the father of Dame Nellie Melba. White soft cover booklet with a large drawing of David Mitchell (1901) on the front. -

Terrill, J.P ...In the late 1960s the area in Wodonga between Hovell and Havelock Streets was zoned for civic purposes. By 1969 Melbourne architect Bruce Marshall had designed the civic centre which included a library, theatre and senior citizens' rooms. The main hall had a seating capacity of 1,000 people but could be divided by a sliding door. into smaller areas. It also included meeting rooms and kitchen facilities. The Civic Centre was officially opened by the Honorable Sir Henry Bolte, K.C.M.P., M.P., Premier of Victoria who was accompanied by the Honorable R. J. Hamer E.D., Minister for Local Government. The Shire President was Cr. James A. Marshall first stood for local council in 1974, having to overcome a childhood stutter by relaxation techniques. He was active in the formation of Nillumbik shire; after 20 years as councillor, he was elected president for 1978 and 1979. In February 1997, his adopted son Stewart Anthony Marshall died as the result of a drug mix-up. He lived in St Andrews and his business was in Hurstbridge. Dr Delaney advocated for the formation of the Ballarat CYMS. Curtin and Scullin being members and learning their debating skills there. The Diocese of Ballarat advocated the development of the Young Christian Workers', YCW, over the CYMS from the 1940's onward as there was a stronger spiritual development base. While there are earlier examples, this is one example of a parish based youth magazine from the organisation in the diocese of Ballarat. Prominent in this YCW group was former Victorian politician Frank Sheehan and local Shire President John Parkin. Bungaree parish had very active parish youth organisations with published journals dating back to the 1930s. Initiallyl producing CYMS magazines at a parish level this had transferred to the YCW by the 1950s and this was the first YCW issue.The Ballarat Catholic Young Men's Society, CYMS was established in1892 and catered for Catholic youth. ycw, bungaree parish, youth group, curtin, scullin, sheehan, parkin. -

He ...This portrait is of James Cameron who was the first president of the Croajingolong Shire ( later Orbost Shire). He was also an inaugural member for East Gippsland in the Legislative Assembly from 1902 until 1920. In 1882 Cameron was the first Orbost councillor of the newly constituted Tambo Shire. In the next twenty years he served as justice of the peace, shire councillor, guardian of St James's Anglican Church, Sunday school superintendent, and president of the local agricultural society and railway league Orbost was at first included in the Bairnsdale Shire from 1882 and was later part of the Tambo Shire. Because of travelling distances the Croajingalong Shire was created in 1892 (name changed to Orbost Shire 17.2.1893 with James Cameron as the first Shire President. In 1994 it amalgamated to become part of East Gippsland Shire Council.This item is associated with James Cameron, a prominent early Orbost identity. Fred Griffith was also a Councillor (1945, 1951-1953) and former Shire President (1951) of the Shire of Eltham. Faye Walker (nee Harris) spent her first ten years living in the house. She recalls "there was a huge tin shed to the rear but toward the east of the house. I assume this is what people were thinking of when reference was made to the ‘’packing shed’. When I was small in the 50s, the shed was no longer being used for fruit packing but by the Griffith family as storage. Many of the pear trees remained but were no longer a commercial venture. The item was donated to Orbost & District Historical society from P.R.O.V. as a Place of Deposit (POD) item for safe keeping by a local history group or museum. The shire covered an area of 9,347 square kilometres and existed from 1892 until 1994 when it became part of the East Gippsland Shire Council. Orbost was at first included in the Bairnsdale Shire from 1882 and was later part of the Tambo Shire. Because of travelling distances the Croajingalong Shire was created in 1892 (name changed to Orbost Shire 17.2.1893 with James Cameron as the first Shire President. In 1994 it amalgamated to become part of East Gippsland Shire Council. This item is a hand-written record of the accounts of the local government. The Orbost Shire Council no longer exists having been absorbed by the East Gippsland Shire Council.A brown leatherette, hard cover book. Peter Graham, Shire President ...Background to the two openings of the "Goat Shed": Following a need to clean up some of the old L&L Centre buildings, in 1989 Council decided to enclose the remaining goat shed in a steel truss frame for use as a store room. Claire Fitzpatrick, who had run animal husbandry and goat classes on the site from the 1975 opening of the L&L Centre, was invited by the Committee to officiate at the naming of the new building on 3/12/1989. Following a fire of the stables/workshops on 8/5/1990 (which had to be cleared off the site) Council/Committee decided to use the $15000 insurance money to upgrade/refurbish the 1989 building to replace classrooms lost in the "stables fire". This refurbished Goat Shed was officially opened on 30/5/1991 by Cr. Peter Graham, Shire President.
