The fair was held to raise funds for the war effort during World War 1.During World War 1 the residents in Sunbury held many events to raise funds for the war effort. The open are in the foreground was part of railway land on the west side of Sunbury Station along Horne Street. The initial preparations to develop the area into a commercial and entertainment precinct were just commencing. These are the original wrought iron gates which served as the entrance to St. Andrews Uniting Church, formerly St.Andrews Presbyterian Church. They were erected there in 1922 and were made at H.V.McKay's Sunshine Harvester foundry, at Sunshine. H.V McKay was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Sunbury. Originally the gates opened onto Stawell Street, which ran at an angle between O'Shanassy and Barkly Streets. Apart from a small area leading to the Memorial Hall the rest of Stawell Street has been incorporated in the Village Green in Sunbury.The gates were restored and erected on their original site in 2000. The dance and concert advertised on the sign was to take place at the hall which was in the grounds of the Sunbury Asylum, commonly referred by residents as 'The Hill'. A number of community events took place at the hall within the asylum complex.The Sunbury Asylum was an important institution for patients, employees and Sunbury residents for many years in the town. The three brick shops were part of the later commercial development which emerged along O'Shanassy Street. These shops were built on the northern side of Brook Street. The train smash occurred in Sunbury between the Station Street level rail crossing and Sunbury Station on February 6th 1952 at around 10pm. The goods train was being pulled by the green locomotive, which was used to take the Jubilee train throughout Victoria in 1951, to acknowledge 125 of European settlement in Victoria, ran into the back of another stationary goods train on the rail line. The guard, A.C Read, in the stationary goods train was killed. P J Mcwhirter, the guard in the other train was injured. The tree lined street in the background is Horne Street.This smash was one of a number that have happened along the Sunbury rail line and in the vicinity of Sunbury Station over the years.A black and white photograph with a white border of a train smash which wrecked a steam engine and carriages. The couple in the photograph are Clyde and Edna Barr who lived in Barkly Street. Clyde was born in Brook Street, Sunbury in 1911. at the time this photo was taken ,Clyde had been living in Sunbury for 83 years. Mrs. Boardman was the midwife. Edna came to live in Sunbury in 1938 and boarded with her uncle, who was the policeman at the time. The Aitken Gap Gaol was originally constructed at the Gap Settlement on the Calder Highway in 1857 for the gold escorts. It was relocated to its present site outside the Sunbury Police Station in Macedon Street between 1989 and 1991.A coloured photograph of the relocated Aitken Gap Gaol. The huts along the railway line were built to house 'navvies' who worked on and maintained the Bendigo-Echuca railway line. At the time this photo was taken, work was being undertaken on the railway line in the Sunbury area.The Bendigo-Echuca was one of Victoria's earliest government owned and operated regional rail systems. The Nook in Sunbury is situated on a wide and deep bend in Jacksons Creek. Today the area is a popular site for passive recreation with a walking path along the Jacksons Creek. The house on the RHS of the photograph was situated near Powlett Street.Before the Aquatic Centre was built in Sunbury the swimming pool at The Nook was the town's swimming pool for many years. Joseph Starkie was the Chairman of the Sunbury Waterworks Trust from 1905 to 1913. During that time he was instrumental in getting a permanent water supply installed for the town of Sunbury. After his death in April 1913, the townspeople erected a memorial which stood at the intersection of Brook and Stawell Street. It was unveiled on 26 January 1915 by Terence O'Brien. The original memorial included a drinking fountain and horse trough. As traffic increased within the town, the centre section of the fountain, without the horse trough, was resited in a reserve opposite the Memorial Hall. The photograph shows the monument on its original site. The 'N' Class steam locomotives were built by Victorian Railways to be used on branch lines throughout the state's regional areas. A total of 73 of these locomotives were built between 1925 and 1951. The locomotive in the photograph was steaming into Sunbury. Sunbury Station was an important stop for steam locomotives travelling on the Bendigo line. A set of 12 photographs of the 'Enterprize Project' showing the different stages of the rebuilding of the historic schooner 'Enterprize' which brought early setters to Victoria from Tasmania in 1834. George Evans who settled in Sunbury was one of the schooner passengers.A coloured photograph of the early stages in the reconstruction of the schooner 'Enterprize'. The ribs of the hull are exposed and some of the boards around the sides of the hull have been fitted. The structure is on a raised scaffold under an open shed. These objects are rusty metal horseshoes with nails attached, they were found on property that was owned by Les Aldridge of the Kismet Park Stud, Sunbury.
