Document - Short Road Ferry ticket, c.1974
From the collection of Warren DOUBLEDAY. The short Road ferry ran between the end of Williamstown Road in Port Melbourne across the narrowest section of the Yarra River to the bottom of the Strand in Williamstown. The name came from it being the 'short road' between the two places. There was a type of ferry service in operation from around 1873 which was modernised in the 20th century to take cars and trucks across the river. It was operated by two heavy chains which sank to the river bed to allow ships to pass.A single trip 15 cent ticket for crossing the Yarra River from Williamstown on the Short Road Ferry. The off white ticket has two diagonal blue stripes and the number F 048261 printed on the side. transport - ferries, short road ferry, williamstown, transport - motor vehicles -

Photograph - Victorian Canoe Club, Repacking, 1930
Canoeing on the River Yarra at Melbourne was an important and widespread recreational pursuit for Melbournians, especially in the first half of the twentieth century. The Victorian Canoe Club was formed in 1912 at a meeting in Melbourne and its first committee elected in the same year. Records indicate that the Club continued into at least the 1950s .The photos in this album are historically and socially significant as a record of recreational activities in the first half of the twentieth century. A number of photographs in the album provide views of sections of the Yarra, as well as areas in regional Victoria, that may otherwise be unavailable. One of 12 sepia [faded] photographs of members of the Victorian Canoe Club. This photo shows four of the club members repacking their canoes on a bank in a location on the Lower Yarra, before canoeing on to Port Phillip Bay. Photograph - Hicks Bros Motor Launch, circa 1953
Commercially-operated boat tours on the Maribyrnong and Yarra Rivers in Melbourne were a major tourist attraction, especially in the first half of the twentieth century. A number of companies ran ferries and motor-launches to locations such as the Riverview Tea Gardens (1909-1947) at Ascot Vale, and the Hawthorn Tea Gardens on the corner of Power Street and Riversdale Road. One of the families which ran these services was Hicks Bros, which from circa 1921 operated a ferry service from Princess Walk (Melbourne) to Studley Park. This is one of a series of 17 black and white undated photographic proofs donated to the Kew Historical Society in 2013 by the Queenscliffe Historical Museum. The series includes images of individuals, tea rooms, ferries, motor launches, ocean liners and tugs. In 1953, the owner of Hicks Bros was involved in an inquest into the drowning of a Ukrainian tourist on a ferry operated by Melbourne Ferries, a rival firm. In published reports of the inquest, reference is made to a number of photographs taken by Robert Irvine Atchison, part-owner of Hicks Bros. As the reverse of the photographs indicates copyright is held by the State of Victoria, the collection may have derived from that year.Historically significant and rare image of one of the major tour boat services which operated on the Yarra River.Faded black and white photographic proof of worker of a ferry service, steering a ferry on the Yarra River. Photograph - Studley Park, 1937
Those sections of Studley Park closest to the River Yarra were set aside as parkland in the 1850s. After initial discussions about whether it was a suitable site for a Government House, much of the land was instead gazetted in the 1860s as the location for a new lunatic asylum, to expand overcrowded mental health facilities at the Yarra Bend Asylum on the other side of the river at Fairfield. Those sections of Studley Park bounded by the Yarra River, Studley Park Road, Princess Street and Fellows Street were subdivided and sold at the Crown Land Sales in 1851. Much of this urban area remained open farmland until the twentieth century, apart from mansions, largely located along the main roads.Original, black and white positive print of what is said to represent Studley Park in 1937. If the attribution and date is literally to be understood, then it would appear that the photograph may have been taken from the Kew side of the river looking across to open farmland in the Yarra Bend Park. If the designation of Studley Park is to be understood more loosely, then it might be a view of what is now East Kew, taken from a section of Kilby Road. Print, Dight's Mill, Yarra Yarra
"In 1839 John Dight purchased Melbourne block 88, which included 26 acres of land along the Yarra River for £481 at the Port Phillip land sales held in Sydney. Dight was already in the business of flour milling and had a mill near Campbell Town in New South Wales called ‘Ceres’. In April 1840, he notified his customers through The Sydney Herald that he was leaving to go to Port Phillip. The first steam powered flour mill was constructed in Melbourne in 1841. Dight built his water powered mill, soon after, from bricks bought over from Tasmania. Dight used the river to power his mill: Water flowed along an inlet channel to turn an undershot water wheel. In order to regulate flow or to ensure flow for times when river levels were low, Dight constructed a rough stone weir. " (https://www.melbournewater.com.au/whatwedo/projectsaroundmelbourne/Documents/A_Short_History_of_Dights_Falls_Fact_Sheet.pdf) This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers, that was donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son John Rogers in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s. Together it forms the largest privately-donated collection within the archives of the Kew Historical Society. An engraving of Dight's Mill on the Yarra. Photograph - Outer Circle Railway Viaduct
The heritage listed Fairfield Bridge was originally constructed for the Outer Circle Railway to bridge the Yarra River between East Kew and Fairfield stations. In the 1930s it was converted for vehicular traffic. In the 2010s a new concrete bridge was erected beside it to increase vehicular capacity.Print copy, enlarged from original snapshot, of the former railway viaduct crossing the Yarra and linking Kew and Fairfield. The original photo predates the conversion of the viaduct into the Chandler Highway Bridge in the 1930s, when the Bridge was adapted to carry vehicular traffic. Book, Giordano Nanni et al, Coranderrk; We will show the country, 2013
Comprises twenty-three extracts from the Minutes of Evidence of the Coranderrk Inquiry, accompanied by an analysis of the historical text and context. The book relies strongly on primary-source materials and accurately references historical analysis from scholarly and Aboriginal perspectives. This book is derived from a verbatim-theatre performance in which professional actors portrayed the witnesses who gave evidence before the 1881 Coranderrk Inquiry.; Inscriptions and Markings: illustrations, photographs, facsimiles, maps, portraits About the book One of the first sustained campaigns for justice, land rights and self-determination in colonial Australia was undertaken by the Aboriginal people of Coranderrk reserve in central Victoria. Despite having created an award-winning farm they were targeted for removal to make way for white settlement. As skilled communicators and negotiators, they lobbied the government, in alliance with their white supporters, and succeeded in triggering a Parliamentary Inquiry in 1881. Coranderrk – We Will Show The Country derives from a unique verbatim-theatre performance where professional actors brought to life the witnesses who gave evidence before the 1881 Parliamentary Coranderrk Inquiry. Rescued from dusty archives, and including renowned Wurundjeri leader, William Barak, those witnesses continue to speak to contemporary audiences. Here, their powerful petitioning can be read alongside that of their non-Aboriginal allies, and those who would move them off their land. The book features a concise and accessible history of the Coranderrk Aboriginal Station and of the events that led to the appointment of the 1881 Parliamentary Coranderrk Inquiry. The book also contains a special edition of the verbatim script which has been annotated and referenced so as to provide a blueprint of how the original minutes of evidence from the 1881 Parliamentary Coranderrk Inquiry were adapted into a theatre script. Each scene of the play has also been introduced with a short biography of each character and a discussion of the key themes raised in their testimony. Supplementing the verbatim script of the performance, the book includes a range of historical images and stills from the ILBIJERRI Theatre Company’s production. Coranderrk – We Will Show The Country celebrates the spirit of collaboration between black and white in pursuit of justice, and offers an engaging way to learn about our past – and to think about our future.
