Lex de Man, manager of Country Fire Association region 14, became Mayor of Nillumbik in 2002, four years after he and fellow councillors were sacked by the Kennett government. In the 2009 Black Saturday fires, he led eastern metropolitan CFA volunteers and was awarded an Australian Fire Service Medal as part of the 2011 Australia Day Awards. He was a CFA volunteer for more than 30 years, a CFA employee for 15 years, and had served with Victoria Police for 18 years. He is a member of the Yarrambat Historical Society, Yarrambat CFA and the Greensborough Hockey Club. He lives at Yarrambat. The cow has a ribbon from the Royal Melbourne Coronation Show across its head, but it is unclear what colour (and therefore placing) it has received.This item is a part of a larger collection of 4,500 Frank Johnson photographs and negatives donated to Melbourne Royal by Frank Johnson’s daughter, Francis Beatty Wallace in 2016. This collection spanning from the 1930s to the 1980s holds important social and historical significance in preserving and sharing Victoria’s agricultural history and community. The photographs capture the local, regional, and state’s shared relationships developed through agriculture and the importance of farming and husbandry to the population and development of Australia. A large proportion of these photographs depict events from the Royal Melbourne Show, including livestock competitions, exhibitions and awards ceremonies. This photograph shows a scene from the first time Allan Charles Quinn attended Carnival in Rio. Although having made several trips to South America previously, he had not experienced Carnival before. The photograph is also complemented by a letter written to his mother including a description of Carnival.The Allan Charles Quinn collection forms a pictorial autobiography of life at sea for a young man in the period immediately following World War II. Commonwealth Bank stored objects in Melbourne (c.1991). Negotiations between Portland Historical Society and Commonwealth Bank of Australia led to gift of works to People of Portland. Stored at Council depot c.1998, retrieved for Maritime Discovery Centre display.Copper bas-relief. Depicting a man in raincoat and wide-brimmed rain hat at a ship's wheel. Behind him are flying birds and in front of him is the tail of a seal diving into waves on the left and the front of a seal on the right. -
