Photograph - AHQ Survey Regiment Open Day - c1970, c1970
This is a set of thirty photographs of an Open Day held at the AHQ Survey Regiment, Bendigo c1970. It’s evident in these photos there was also a technical tour for dignitaries through the production areas in Air Survey, Cartographic and Lithographic Squadrons. It is known an Open Day coincided with the Freedom of Entry to the City Parade, an honour that was conferred by the Bendigo City Council to the AHQ Survey Regiment and held on the 14th of June 1970. As the CO LTCOL Bill Sprenger is positively identified, it’s highly probable these photos were taken at that time. This is a set of photographs of an Open Day held at the AHQ Survey Regiment, Bendigo c1970. Photograph - Maps despatched by Printer Technicians at the Army Survey Regiment, c1970s to c1990s
These nine photographs of Printer Technicians working on the despatch of bulk printed map stock to customers, were probably taken circa 1970s to 1990s in Lithographic Squadron at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo. Except for photo .3P, personnel are not annotated on the photos. Despatch was the final task performed by a team of Printer Technicians. It involved the wrapping of trimmed bulk maps into manageable parcels and sending them by freight to customers or to the Army Map Depot at Bandiana, VIC. The task’s Due date and sensitivity were essential considerations in the planning of production affecting the lead time and method of delivery. Freighting by commercial means was the normal method for routine tasks. The method of despatch for urgent time-critical tasks sometimes meant having to use military freight or safe-handed by Army Survey Regiment personnel. The mishap captured in photos .6P and .7P was rare, but costly if it was a time critical task. The Print Room’s Map Handling Station in photos .8P and .9P provided ergonomic benefits to the Printer Technician and improved despatch productivity. This is a set of photographs of Printer Technicians involved in the despatch of bulk printed map stock c1970s to c1990s. Photograph, From Stanhope News, 1959
A photo from a book compiled about the Legacy children's residence called Stanhope. These photos show the archway at the front of the property. Stanhope was supervised by Matron Dorothy (Dorrie) Vines from the time it opened in 1946 until she retired in December 1966. It is likely she compiled this notebook as she is referred to as 'self' in then photo. Individual pages of photos or newspaper clippings have been added separately. Items 01817 to 01827. Blamey House (purchased 1947) , Stanhope (purchased 1945) and Harelands (purchased 1950) were residences run by Melbourne Legacy to take care of children whose fathers were servicemen, and who may have been left orphans, or whose mother may have been unable to care for them herself, or they needed to stay in Melbourne for further education. Harelands accommodated boys and girls under the age of 14, Blamey House looked after boys over 14, and Stanhope looked after girls over 14. The children were cared for until they were old enough to become independent. A record of the exterior of Stanhope. Photograph, Tree Plaques, 1988
Photos of plaques at the base of trees at the Shrine of Remembrance. One is of the Lone Pine planted from by Legacy from the seeds of a cone from Gallipoli and planted by Legatee Stan Savige in 1933 in remembrance of fallen comrades of the 24th Battalion. The plaque is in the form of the red and white diamond badge of the 24th Battalion. This tree had to be removed in 2012 due to its age had led to safety concerns. Also a plaque from the Olive tree of peace planted by Legatee Frank Doolan in 1973 which was the 50th anniversary of Legacy. Other trees were for Netherlands' Service Personnel, and the 18th squadron NEI-RAAF Forces Association, and the fallen comrades of the RAAF Beaufort squadrons. There is also a tree for the 'Carry On' Club of Victoria. These photos were taken at the same time as views of the Legacy Garden and photos of the man and donkey statue at the Shrine of Remembrance. Believed to be late 1980s when the garden was renamed for Legacy, and before 1998 when the statue of the Widow and Children was installed. Photos were in a scrapbook of photos spanning 1983 to 1991.A record of trees at the Shrine.Colour photo x 5 of plaques at the base of trees planted at the Shrine of Remembrance.Printed on reverse 'shrine of remembrance, memorial -

The photo shows President W.A. Perrin accepting a donation from the Mr W.P. Mein of Williamstown Racing Club at a Legatee function. The Comradeship Bell is on the table so it is assumed it is a Legacy luncheon, usually held weekly. Photograph, Original would have been taken towards the end of Bulu's life in the early 1870s. The photo was dated "30 March 1933 THE ARGUS"
Joeli Bulu was one of the first missionaries to Fiji. Not a Christian when he grew up but was converted after listening to John Thomas in Tonga. The king of Tonga had just been converted to Christianity and asked for volunteers to go to Fiji as a missionary. His reception in Fiji was not welcoming, but he was such a tenacious chap and because he was likeable he became one of the most influential missionaries in the South Pacific. He was a rascal as a young man in Tonga and the meeting with John Thomas was the thing that changed his life. Very well regarded now in Fiji. His active period was the 1838 to 1870 - John Thomas came to Tonga in 1826. From Wikipedia: Joeli Bulu (Siaoeli Pulu) (around 1810-May 1877) became a Christian in 1833. He was one of a band of Tongan teachers who came to Fiji in 1838, and pioneered the work of the Christian Church in this group. He served the Church in Fiji for almost four decades. He came to Lakeba by canoe, and was appointed to help with the printing of catachisms and passages of Scripture. Lorimer Fison translated Bulu's oral account of hislife. This was edited by George Stringer Rowe and printed in England in 1871 with the title, "Joel Bulu: The Autobiography of a Native Minister in the South Seas". He served first at Lakeba and then at Rewa, and after that the station was closed because of the wars, at Viwa. John Hunt sent him to investigate the possibilities of establishing the work in Vanua Levu, and to that field he was later appointed. He was the first Pacific Islander to be placed alone in charge of a circuit - Ono, in 1848, and also the first to be ordained (1850) as a Native Assistant Missionary. After this he served at Nadi (Vaua Levu), Bua and Cakaudrove where he pioneered the work before any white missionaries were established there. Afterwards he was appointed to Bau. He died in May 1877 and his grave is beside that of John Hunt at Viwa Island.B&W photo, no backing, print from The Argus files, dated 30 March 1933.
