Book, Dept. of Veterans' Affair, Greece and Crete, 2011
During World War II Greek independence was once again threatened. In October 1940, seeking to make Italy the master of the eastern Mediterranean, Benito Mussolini's armies invaded Greece, only to find themselves beaten back by the Greeks. Unfortunately for Greece, this setback for his Italian ally made the German leader, Adolf Hitler, turn his attention to the possible danger to Germany's ambitions from the Greeks, particularly if they should seek support from Britain. In March 1941, British support became a reality when a military expedition called 'Lustre Force', which included Australian troops, was dispatched to Greece from Egypt. ...more than 60,000 British and Dominion servicemen and women ... fought in Greece between November 1940 and May 1941, among them some 17,000 Australians and 16,700 New Zealanders. What circumstances had brought these men and women from half a world away to the aid of the Greeks?Ill, maps, p.220.non-fictionDuring World War II Greek independence was once again threatened. Book, Algonquin Books of Chapel Hil, Lincoln on war, 2011
President Lincoln used his own weapons--his words--to fight the Civil War as brilliantly as any general who ever took the field. In Lincoln on War, historian Harold Holzer gathers and interprets Lincoln's speeches, letters, memoranda, orders, telegrams, and casual remarks, organizing them chronologically and allowing readers to experience Lincoln's growth from an eager young Indian War officer to a middle-aged dove congressman to a surprisingly hardened and determined hawk as the Union's commander-in-chief. We observe a man willing to sacrifice life and treasure in unprecedented quantities, to risk wounding the pride of vain generals, and even to mislead the public if it meant the preservation of an unbreakable union of states, the destruction of slavery, and the restoration of America as an example to inspire the world. This volume covers strategy; tactics; the endless hiring, sustaining, motivating, and dismissal of commanders; military discipline; and military technology. Modern commanders-in-chief have repeatedly quoted Lincoln to justify their own wars, so it behooves us as citizens to know Lincoln's record well. From masterpieces such as the Gettysburg Address to lesser-known meditations on God's purposes, Lincoln on War is the first book to highlight exclusively Lincoln's sublime and enduring words on warIndex, ill, p.296.President Lincoln used his own weapons--his words--to fight the Civil War as brilliantly as any general who ever took the field. Sculpture - Anuradha Patel and Zabelski Han, Anuradha Patel and Zabelski Han, Blue Orchid, 2011
The work consists of a sculpture and seat. The sculpture is a tree form and the seat is based on a leaf shape. History is evoked through the flora and fauna imagery, from Indigenous plants to those of the farms, back-yards and kitchen gardens of the area, and diversity is evoked primarily through figures holding hands. Both pieces are fabricated from powdercoated mild steel.
