This piece of newspaper had been used as wallpaper lining. The Weekly Times was first published on September 11, 1869, by a group of Melbourne businessmen who owned the now-defunct Daily Telegraph, with the stated aim to be a “journal of literature, sport, agriculture, science and politics”. It is Australia’s oldest rural newspaper, and is known far and wide as the Bible of the Bush. These articles were collated by Mary Gilbert. Mary Isabelle Gilbert was born in 1905 in Orbost, Australia. She was born to John Gilbert and Annie Cameron Gilbert. This magazine was published to raise money for the State Disaster appeal. It was a tribute to the photographers and reporters who contributed to the coverage of the Ash Wednesday bushfires for these publications.this item is a contemporary record of a major fire disaster in Victoria and is a useful reference tool.A large 78 pp stapled magazine. On the front cover is a coloured photograph of the town of Macedon the morning after the bush fires in February 1983. It has white ASH WEDNESDAY in print on a red background above the photograph and 1983 BUSHFIRES in white print on a red background belop the photograph. The photograph extends to the back cover. The 1971 flood was the the worst flood on record. At Jarrahmond it was at least 11 metres and up to one and a half kilometres wide on the flats causing enormous damage to the flood plain. Records say that "The brown floodwater stain in Bass Strait could be seen from passing airliners." Considerable damage was done to railway infrastructure, roads and farms.
