Coloured photograph of Church built in Wakeham Street Stawell in 1870 and used as a Free Methodist Chapel. After the various branches of the Methodist Church united about 1900 the building was used by the Free Masons until their building in Skene Street was erected in 1926. Albert Thomas Holden was born in 1866 at Geelong, died in 1935 and is buried in Boroondara cemetery. From 1883-84 he taught in Kyneton and became a Methodist lay preacher. He graduated with a B.A. from Ormond College in 1888. He entered the Methodist ministry and worked in Burwood and at the Omeo Home Mission. During 1892 he toured Europe and the Middle East with Rev Bickford. In 1898 Holden was an army chaplain and served South Africa. He became Methodist Chaplain General in 1913. In 1904 Holden became Secretary of Methodist Home Missions and traveled throughout Australia. Holden was General Superintendent of the Methodist Church of Australasia from 1929 - 1932 and then President- General. Holden became a Freemason in 1898. Rev Stuart Rea was at Central Mission, Lygon Street, Carlton from 1938-1942.G073.1 Small brown leather suitcase-style case with two lock catches and a handle. The case has a stained wood insert containing G073.2 - G073.9 eight glass communion glasses. The case is lined with navy blue grosgrain fabric and has a small leather label in the lid. Secured in the lid with leather straps is a round silver box, G073.10, with an etched lid, G073.11. G073.12 Silver cylindrical flask with an etched design on the front with G073.13 silver screw top, cork lined, lid. G073.14 Circular white lace mat in a separate section of the box. The Wesleyan Church, Denham Street in Lower Hawthorn, as the area was then called, was opened on 2 May 1886. The building was designed by Geelong architect William Henry Cleverdon and was built of brick in the Gothic style. Its dimensions were 55 x 33 ft and the façade incorporated a rose window and spire 50 ft high. A wooden vestry was placed to the rear. The building and the organ were seriously damaged by fire on 1 April 1970, started by a painter's blowtorch.
