Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and eurythmics, the Demonstration was an annual event to showcase their skills. Melbourne Legacy conducted Annual Demonstrations / Parades from 1928 through to the late 1970's, usually held at Melbourne Town Hall or Olympic Pool Stadium. The beautiful costumes were made by members of the Junior Legacy Mothers' Club and the Melbourne Legacy Wives' Association. A photo of Legacy President Neville visiting group of young legatees at a gymnastics class in Footscray. There are 12 boys, of various ages, in gymnastics gear, some holding books or certificates. Legacy clubs ran classes for junior legatees for many years. It was part of providing for the children of their deceased comrades. The skills they learned were show cased in an annual demonstration usually at the Melbourne Town Hall. It appears to be photo taken professionally, as there are several photos of different classes (see 00862 - 00867) perhaps to record Legacy classes for promotion purposes. Many were published in the September 1953 newsletter. A photo from a newsletter from September 1953. The photo shows the Footscray boys receiving certificates and badges from the President of Legacy, Legatee S Nevile. The article says the group offers boys the chance of forming lasting friendships with other Junior Legatees, and evening of healthful exercise, games, basketball, etc under the guidance of a fully qualified and capable physical education instructor. Gymnasium kit and free milk are provided for each boy and during the year other interests are available, such as picture nights, pie nights, Christmas parties and outing to Luna Park etc. The Footscray Class was in the Drill Hall, at the corner of Barkly and Gordon Streets Footscray at 7.30 on Friday nights. There was an article on Harelands, the new residence in Willesmere Road Kew. New matron was Miss Secker. Also an article about the Queen's coronation and the traditions in the ceremony. A photo of President S S Neville. It covered events for the junior legatees such as basketball and boys classes in different locations such as Footscray and Auburn boys' classes. Also mentioned Longbank a holiday home in Camperdown available at reasonable rates to Legacy Widows. A newsletter published by Legacy in this format for many years from 1942. It mentions "Issued from time to time for Private Circulation among the Sons and Daughters of Deceased Service men and Merchant Seamen who served their Country during the War of 1914-18, or the present War" Many articles on the work of Legacy, including features on boys classes, girls classes, camps, the residences and where their past residents ended up.
