Chuck's studios in the Royal Arcade Melbourne. In 1885, following the introduction of dry plate photography, he began a series of landscape series, which were commercially successful. In 1965, she became the first Australian to be selected by Butterick Company Inclusive to join their pattern making company. The stylish Tullo ‘look’ in the first half of the 1960s was young, colourful, feminine and most importantly had a strong American appeal. The patterns were distributed worldwide except to Russia and Germany. At this time, she had a collection of 300 garments. In the second half of the 1960s, she developed a new design range, influenced by the American 'hippie' style, featuring floor length dresses with long narrow sleeves, high round collars, and ruffles on the hems and at the cuffs. Patterns and colours became brighter to match prevailing tastes. This blouse is one of a number of items donated to the Fashion Collection by Dione McIntyre.The McIntyre Collection of clothing and clothing accessories forms one of the largest single donations to our Fashion & Design collection. It includes clothing and clothing accessories worn by four women in the Cohen and McIntyre families across three generations. After marrying in 1870 he moved to Talbot in Victoria until 1876 when he opened a studio in the Royal Arcade in Melbourne. After 1885 N.J. Caire gave up his city work and made his home in South Yarra and devoted the rest of his life to outdoor photography, specializing in the bush, the gullies and the mountains of south-eastern Victoria. The Original Beehive store dates from the early tent days of the gold rush. A two story building was erected in 1864, which included mining exchange offices on the upper floor. The building burnt down in 1871. The current building, designed by Charles Webb, was built in 1872, Allens Walk shopping arcade on the ground floor runs between Pall Mall and Hargreaves St. with offices on the first and second floors. Robert Oswald Henderson was the managing proprietor of the Beehive Stores. Born on the 27th of March 1875, he was the second son of Thomas Hope and Marion Henderson. Thomas Hope Henderson was formerly part owner of the Beehive store, in the firm of Henderson and Goodisson. After the death of his father in 1899, Robert Oswald Henderson assisted Mr. J. R. Goodisson in the management of the Beehive. The Stores passed into the ownership of the Henderson family after the retirement of Mr Goodisson and Robert Oswald Henderson was appointed managing proprietor. This light woollen evening dress is made from Peppinella, a new fabric Norma Tullo introduced into her range in 1973. The fabric was used exclusively by Tullo, and came from the wool of Peppin Merino (first introduced into Australia in 1858 by the Peppin brothers). According to the papers of the day Tullo’s 1973 winter collection featured ‘St. Trinian’s styles to garments dripping lace, in bold plain colours to floral prints.” Shirley Lyle designed the floral fabric. Norma Tullo (1935-2019) was one of the leading fashion designers of her time, establishing her label in 1956. After establishing a business the Old Metropole Arcade in Melbourne in 1956, with three sewing machines, Tullo's ready to wear fashions for young women became sought after, and her business flourished. In 1966 the Japanese department store chain Isetan Co Ltd began to mass-produce her garments for their stores across Japan. Tullo closed her label in 1977, and later worked for Fletcher Jones. Ann Carew, 2020The dress is historically significant as a dress designed by Norma Tullo, a leading fashion designer of the 1960s and 1970s. During this period the Australian Wool Industry strove to promote wool, and to develop light woollen fabrics to compete with new synthetic fibres such as rayon. The garment is historically significant for the use of a merino wool showcasing its versatility for dress fabrics. Full length woman's dress with full skirt and long sleeves, collared with open neck and pleat work on bodice. This is one of a series of postcards of photographs taken by socialite photographer Nicholas John Caire. N.J. Caire had a great love for the area and in the late 1800's took many photographs of Marysville and its surrounds. N.J. Caire was born in 1837 in Guernsey. He arrived in Adelaide about 1860 along with his parents who encouraged his early interest in photography. He opened a studio in Adelaide in 1867 after traveling extensively throughout the Gippsland taking photographs. In the background are signs for Sharpe's store, Parers Hotel, Lewis's and Normans. On the underside of the photograph written in black ink "Cable Tram in Bourke St Jan 1937" Noelle Jones - 24/5/2021 It is no later than 1946, as Maples purchased the Love & Lewis business (194-6 Bourke St) in that year (the business was being sold by the executors of the owner). Note also that Parer's (not Parkers) Hotel, at 200 Bourke Street, was established in the 1880s by the Parer Brothers, originally from Spain. The most famous member of the family was Damien Parer, the WWII photographer. The building was demolished in 1960, and is the site of the Midcity Arcade. Sharpes bought the property on the left (202-4 Bourke St) in 1954, after being tenants for 20 years.
