After gold was discovered in Golden Square, it was inevitable prospectors would cut their way through the bush to what is now known as Eaglehawk. The legend says two prospectors in 1852, John Rooke and Joseph Crook, were looking for one of their horses, which had gone astray, when they stopped to rest. Where they stopped they found gold. After three weeks of digging, Crook and Rooke left the area with a massive 48 pounds in gold weight.
