Frank Wright was a renown resident of Smeaton, where he was born. He lived at Laura Villa, and attended Smeaton State School. His father William was a gold miner and his mother's name was Sarah. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and was awarded a gold medal for the highest marks in the ALCM examinations in the British Colonies at the age of seventeen years. He became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was later appointed Musical Director of the London County Council, where he organized many amazing concerts in parks, in and around the London district. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and conducted at the Guildhall of Music and Drama. Frank was often invited to adjudicate Brass Band Championships around Europe, in Australia, including South Street and in New Zealand. St.Andrew's Presbyterian Church at Bulla was built on Crown land that the congregation received on 6th September 1858. It overlooks Oaklands Road and the surrounding farms as well as the Tullamarine Airport. The building at the rear is the former manse. It functioned as a place of worship for over 150 years and celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2009. A small wooden chapel was built on this site but was destroyed by a cyclone in 1948. It was immediately replaced by the present church, which has simple architecture and interior ornaments. The concrete building is a large rectangle to which is added a square tower supporting a small bell tower. Christ Church Anglican Church was opened on 7th March 1888. The eight vestry members had to guarantee the minister's stipend of a shilling each Sunday. There was no electricity so kerosene lamps were used. The women ran social evenings, concerts, lanternslide evenings and bazaars to raise funds. St. Mary's Anglican Church at Bulla originally occupied a site along Oaklands Road, adjacent to 'Woodlands' homestead. It was established in 1859. With there building of the Melbourne Airport at Tullamarine it was found that the church on its existing site was directly under the flight path of the aircraft so the building was demolished stone by stone and rebuilt in the Bulla township adjacent to the Alistair Clark Rose Garden. The original site has not been developed because some early graves are there.St. Mary's Church at Bulla is one of the earliest to be established in the Bulla district.
