The Bendigo Ordnance Factory began operating in 1942, producing heavy artillery and naval guns. In the late 1990s the then Federal Government-owned facility was sold to the multinational Thales, which continues to operate the factory today. The Ted Hocking collection of photos were digitized onto two CDs in 2014. As well the Bendigo Historical Society has a collection of glass negatives includes some slides of women working in the munitions factory. Seven slides were included in an album that was prepared for Dr Edith Summerskill who visited Australia in 1944 as part of an Empire Parliamentary Delegation. The album included photographs of Australian women working at the factory during WW2. A copy of the album is in the Collection of the Australian War Memorial.Twenty-five photos produced by the Bendigo Munitions Factory, later known as the Ordnance Factory and then the Australian Defense Industries. [from a contemporary report:] The festival parade was held at 11.00 am on Saturday, 10 November 1990, commencing in Youth Road (behind Eltham Railway Station) and Diamond Street. As per tradition, the Shire of Eltham Historical Society entered a float in the parade but for the first time combined with the Diamond Valley Arts Society to produce the float. The theme of the parade was ''Spring into Summer". In accordance with this theme the Society's float depicted artists on a spring painting excursion. Part of the group was "Walter Withers" painting a landscape. There was also another artist painting a portrait of a girl in a spring costume. Joh Ebeli was responsible for preparation of the float. The float won the prize for the best display. The Shire of Eltham District Society's Parade float theme for 1989 was gold mining which, of course, was a most important aspect of our early history. Bruce Ness assembled the float with items loaned by Warrandyte Historical Society and quite a bit of his own ingenuity. Phyllis MacDonald also arranged for the Victorian Folk Music Club to provide us with appropriate musical accompaniment. To provide a level of authenticity, a present day prospector, Jack Hodson was in charge of the equipment on the float. 'Goatie' was William STUART first horse. William's parents owned the Gladysdale Diary on the corner of Bridge street and Williamstown Road. The newsagent and Milk Bar on the corner of Ross & Bridge Street is still in operation (2024). The Shire of Eltham Historical Society's float in the Eltham Community Festival Parade won the award for the best display for the second year running. We received a trophy donated by the Billabong Family Bistro, Lower Plenty. The theme of the float was the Eltham Bush Nursing Hospital. The float was prepared by Bruce Ness with some help from other members. A number of members contributed with costumes and other props. Hospital equipment was kindly loaned by the Judge Book Village and in what has become something of a tradition, members of the Victorian Folk Music Club accompanied the Society for the Parade.
