... was subsequently sold to Carey Baptist Grammar School. Both the Kew... and its landholding was subsequently sold to Carey Baptist Grammar ...Sports Clubs in Kew in the final decades of the 19th century and in the early 20th century were often umbrella organisations with facilities for a number of sports. Typically in Kew, this included teams in lawn bowls, tennis and croquet. The Kew Bowling Club was formed in 1880 while the privately owned Auburn Heights Recreation Club was opened in 1904. By 1998, the two Clubs decided to amalgamate at the Auburn Heights site in Barkers Road, forming the Kew Heights Sports Club. The combined club was itself taken over by the Melbourne Cricket Club in 2012 becoming MCC Kew Sports Club. In 2017 MCC Kew closed and its landholding was subsequently sold to Carey Baptist Grammar School. Both the Kew and Auburn Heights Clubs assembled important collections. These historically significant and large collections were donated to the Society in 2020. The collections include manuscripts, pictures, trophies, plans, honour boards etc. The combined collections of the four sporting clubs making up the collection number hundreds of items that are historically significant locally. They are also significant to the sporting history of the greater Melbourne area and to the sports of lawn bowls and tennis in Australia in the 19th and 20th centuries. The collection illuminates two of the Victorian historic themes - 'Building community life' through forming community organisations and 'Shaping cultural and creative life' by participating in sport and recreation.Photographic album compiled by John Chapman about the construction of the synthetic green at Kew Heights Sports Club in 2005.PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE KEW HEIGHTS SYNTHETIC GREEN APRIL-MAY 2005. Typically in Kew, this included teams in lawn bowls, tennis and croquet. The Kew Bowling Club was formed in 1880 while the privately owned Auburn Heights Recreation Club was opened in 1904. By 1998, the two Clubs decided to amalgamate at the Auburn Heights site in Barkers Road, forming the Kew Heights Sports Club. ... No. 691 and then spent four years at Beechworth Grammar School... at Beechworth Grammar School. He was apprenticed to the Warrnambool ...These rulers have been distributed by the Warrnambool chemist, George Le Couteur as advertising tools for his business. George Le Couteur operated a pharmacy at 78 Liebig Street, Warrnambool from 1896 to 1908. Born in Warrnambool in 1856 Le Couteur was educated at the Anglican-sponsored Warrnambool Common School No. 691 and then spent four years at Beechworth Grammar School. He was apprenticed to the Warrnambool chemist, Michael Ryan and then worked as a chemist in Kyneton and Melbourne. When he returned to Warrnambool he took over the business of Frank Uren in Liebig Street, building a second storey on to the building. He was very active in community affairs in Warrnambool. He left Warrnambool in 1908 to open a pharmacy in Hawthorn, Melbourne. When he retired in 1935 he was the oldest registered chemist in Victoria. The information hand printed on the back of one of the rulers has an historical inaccuracy in that J.A. Bromfield was not the first known chemist in Warrnambool. These rulers are of interest because of their connection to the pharmacy business of George Le Couteur He was a prominent person in Warrnambool in the 19th and early 20th centuries. These two oblong wooden rulers have imperial measurements ( to 12 inches). There is black printing on both sides advertising a Warrnambool chemist. One ruler is much stained and has a piece missing on the centre top edge. The other ruler has information on one side hand printed in black ink.‘With compliments of G.T. Le Couteur, Chemist, Liebig Street, Warrnambool’ ‘For a cough or cold use Le Couteur’s Pectoral Cough Mixture. Bottles 1s.6d., 2s.6d.’ ‘First Chemist Shop in Warrnambool 1853 Mr A. From the AWM Matron HE Tait is Helen Elizabeth Tait, from Maffra who had trained at the Alfred Hospital and joined the Australian Army Nursing Service. She was awarded the Royal Red Cross (2nd Class) for her service in World War One. Her full record is available from the National Archive of Australia. It shows she was serving at the 1st Australian General Hospital in Rouen in November of 1918 when the war ended. RRC is The Royal Red Cross (RRC) which is a military decoration awarded in the United Kingdom and Commonwealth for exceptional services in military nursing. After the war she returned to Melbourne and was Matron of Melbourne Grammar School. She never married and died in 1976.The founding Legatees all fought in World War One and momentos like this flag would have been appreciated by them.A French flag from World War One.Note with the flag is typed and says ' French Flag which floated over the Town Hall in Rouen on Armistice Day November 11th 1918. Clothing - Dress, Fancy dress, circa 1911
... and attended Firbank Church of England Girls Grammar School.... and attended Firbank Church of England Girls Grammar School. dolly ...This dress is a 'Dolly Varden' or 'shepherdess" style costume worn by Ida Annie Wallace (1890-1976) on a sea voyage to China accompanying her parents in 1911. The BHS has a photo of Ida wearing this dress when she was a guest at a dance for young people given by the Lord Mayor of Melbourne (possibly T. J. Davey). This party may have been held on the ship or it may have been a seperate event. This style dress was a popular choice for fancy dress in the late 1890s and early 1900s. The style is named after the character Dolly Varden in Charles Dickens, 'Barnaby Rudge' 1841. Around 1872, Dolly Varden-inspired costumes and paraphernalia were very a popular craze. Family information states that the silk for this dress was purchased by Ida and Marjorie's grandfather's sister (great aunt) in England circa 1840. The dress was donated by Marjorie Wallace (1901-1999), Ida's sister. Marjorie did not accompany the family to China, but stayed home with a governess. Marjorie lived in Brighton between 1923 and circa 1950 and attended Firbank Church of England Girls Grammar School.A dress consisting of bodice (.1) and skirt (.2). The bodice is made from beige silk with sprays of red and blue flowers and originally laced down the centre front with pink ribbon. The lower part of the bodice is modelled on a late 18th century polonaise design. The bodice is boned and features waist tapes. The elbow length sleeves are finished with beige hand made Maltese lace featuring Maltese crosses. The mid calf length skirt is made from pale pink silk which has been quilted and lined to create a stiffened form. Also with the dress is a piece of scrap floral fabric (.3) that is the same as the bodice fabric.dolly varden, marjorie wallace, barnaby rudge, charles dickens, fancy dress, ida annie wallace -

Book, Moreover - by Walter Murdoch, 1935
... of Warrnambool College. They bought out Stanley’s Warrnambool Grammar... of Warrnambool College. They bought out Stanley’s Warrnambool Grammar ...This book contains essays written by Walter Murdoch in 1935. Walter Logie Forbes Murdoch (1874-1970) had a distinguished academic career and became Australia’s best-known essayist. He was a household name to two generations of Australians through his radio broadcasts and syndicated literary columns in several Australian newspapers. In 1901 Walter Murdoch came to Warrnambool, going into partnership with James Scott, the Headmaster of Warrnambool College. They bought out Stanley’s Warrnambool Grammar School. When Scott retired Murdoch became the sole owner and Headmaster of the school. While in Warrnambool Murdoch wrote a textbook, ‘The Struggle for Freedom’, a book which covers English constitutional history and has chapters on Australian government at all levels including the new Federal Government. In 1904 Murdoch left Warrnambool to take up a position lecturing in English at Melbourne University. He went on to become the foundation Professor of English at the University of Western Australia and later its Chancellor. Murdoch University in Western Australia is named after him. Murdoch published over 40 books, one of which is the collection of essays called’ Moreover’. He was knighted in 1964. This book is of interest as an example of the writings of Walter Murdoch, an important Australian literary figure who was a resident of warrnamboo and proprietor of a private school in the town in the early 1900s. This is a hard cover book of 252 pages. The cover is green with an image of a quill pen on the front cover. The book has a preface, a contents page, 33 essays by Walter Murdoch and an index. There are no photographs or illustrations to accompany the text.Inside front page: A bookplate with the name ‘Dot’, a sketch of a Father Christmas and ‘25/12/35, Merry Xmas!
