Phil BERRY (1963 - ) Born Ballarat Completing a Master of Arts at the University of Ballarat (now Federation) in 2012, he workes as a sessional staff member for the Arts Academy. Artist Phil Berry recalled ‘As a child I spent the majority of my holidays at my uncle and auntie’s. Uncle Jack was a prisoner of War at Changi during World War 2. Repatriated to Australia he was emaciated and clutched his prize possession, an old spoon. Part of his daily life during the extreme hardship of the camp, the spoon was a symbol of his survival, a constant in extreme uncertainty.’ ‘Home again Jack married, started a family and embraced peace. A kind and gentle man, I was fortunate to have known him. The coming of peace had given back what war had nearly taken away.’ This item won the Lucato Peace Prize and is part of the Federation University Art Collection. The Art Collection features over 1000 works and was listed as a 'Ballarat Treasure' in 2007.Framed painted canvas depicting a spoon. A sculpture of an Australian navy man that was produced as a commemorative piece by a Melbourne firm called Ceramic Innovations. It is filled with Tawny Port and is part of a wider set of bar pieces. The three pieces held at Melbourne Legacy are tributes to the three armed forces and are called 'Digger', 'RAAFIE' and 'Jack Tar'. They were once in the comradeship room and now stored in the archive. In 2005, members of the PMH&PS undertook a study of the residents of the houses in a Port Melbourne street precinct from the 1880s to 1960. The area is bounded by Evans Street, the E side of Bridge Street, S side of Williamstown Road, Farrell Street both the E & W sides plus the section of Ross Street between Farrell and Bridge and the part of Derham Street between Farrell and Bridge. The resulting map and an interactive CD won the Best Community Research, Registers & Records project at the 2007 Victorian Community History Awards. The project was launched on the railway reserve near the corner of Evans & Farrell streets. Parishes were Beaconsfield (Tas.), Deloraine (Tas.), Woomelang, Ballarat, Euroa, Noble Park, Sandringham, West Brunswick. He married Marjorie Shepherd 17/5/1947, and they had a daughter, Meredith.
