Gentleman's brown suede fabric spats, bound at seams and lower edge in .75 cm leather strips. Four one cm, diameter plastic buttons at outer ankle, with four stitched buttonholes. Centre front seam is lined with a leather strip, opening edges lined with cotton tape, and finely machine stitched. Puttees were long established items of a soldiers kit. Although time consuming items to tie correctly, puttees were a very comfortable and practical method of ensuring that mud and loose debris would not enter the tops of ankle length boots. Short puttees were common during the second world war.A pair of dark khaki woven wool cloth bands that were wound around a soldier's ankle. Each puttee has cotton stitching across one end, with the other end stitched into a triangular shape. Attached to the triangular end is a long khaki woven cotton strap that was used to secure the puttee in place. Clothing. Wrist length, dark cream, machine stitched leather gloves. Machine stitching-two rows, gives the effect of pin-tucks, are sewn in a diagonal direction from the outer wrist, across the back of the hand. The shorter outer stitching, 4 cm long has two 6mm long leather stitches, at right angle to the machine stitching. The second diagonal stitching runs around the top of the glove, and 9.5 cms across the back of the hand. It is offset with three 6 mm stitches at right angles. Christening gowns are traditional outfits made just for baby’s baptism. They are almost always white and can be very ornate, highly decorated garments. Usually, the christening gown is quite long – much longer than the baby being christened, particularly when it is worn by a young or very small baby. Many families keep a “family” christening gown that has been passed down through various family members and is used for the baptism ceremony. This christening robe was probably used by the Cameron family.The christening gown was a late 18th century innovation usually made of white lawn, muslin or net, longer than the baby and fancier than a day gown. The design was a more moderate version of contemporary adult fashion. Most 19th century christening gowns featured lace. All, until the end of the century, had low necklines and short sleeves. There is a long sleeved, waist length jacket, satin lined, with round neck with five buttons and button holes at front. The fabric is of stretch cotton. Winner of Expressions 2004 Wool Quilt prize. The stitch as a measure of time is explored in this quilt. It is from a series i have been working on about my local environment. Shaped by time and the elements, Bow Wow Gorge us visited by more than 150 bird species.Quilt is a combination of silk, wool, baft, linen, and rayon thread. Two halves of the quilt have been hand sewn together and are a rusty red and grey in colour with small blue patches using plant dyes. In the 1820s perforated cardboard first became available. Then, with the invention of the printing press, designs such as sentimental or religious mottos were pre-printed on the card and a Victorian craze began as it provided a simpler and cheaper method of embroidering for the masses compared to the previously far more expensive linen embroidery. Over the following decades embroidering of punched-card grew enormously in popularity and a variety of articles from Christmas decorations to birthday cards, and in this case a Neele case to celebrate Queen Victoria's golden Jubilee in 1887. The pioneer settlers and market gardeners of Moorabbin Shire had to be self reliant and made their own clothing and utensils. This is one of many items used to exhibit the skill and craftsmanship of the women in these families. The background history to this quilt is unknown as, like several of the Running Stitch quilts, it was found in an op-shop, this time in Ballarat. However, the technique used to bind it together and the rarity of the materials make it a valuable piece of our 'thrifty history'. The quilt insert has been made with layers of recycled bed coverings. It would have most likely had a cover made of a fabric (such as cretonne) as the layers have only been loosely held together with large quilting stitches. The outer layer is made of "marcella": a heavily woven cotton damask. These types of bedspreads were quite expensive and hardwearing. They were often handed down through the family and it is not surprising to see that the use for this particular bed covering has been continued past the 'presentable' stage on a bed.Detail of edge showing layers and stitching method. Bodice of jacket has 8 cm vertical lace inserts next to the edge of the bands, continuing over the shoulders and down the back of the bodice to the waist. A 16 cm lace insert runs at right angles to the bodice inserts along the top of the kimono cut long sleeves. The sleeves have an 8.5 cm turned back fabric cuff. From the waistline is an ungathered skirt widening slightly at the hem. Probably 1890's to early 1900's. The Dress and Mantle Makers departments was part of F. Davey and Co. and the department was run by Miss Middleton, formerly of the Beehive. F Davey and Co. sold their View Point premises in Oct 1904.Bodice (Wedding dress), hand and machine stitched. Silk lined with polished cotton. Slim ruched sleeves - ruched at inner and elbow side of sleeve (hand sewn). Elbow edge of ruching forms two ''frilled pleats'' down the sleeve to the wrist. Wrist edge lily pointed and finished with a 9 cm underfill of cotton lace. Top of sleeves have a leg-o-mutton balloon effect panel sewn at the shoulder and the upper arm. This balloon effect hangs down over the sleeves almost to the elbow. Top of sleeve has an embroidered lace frill hanging over armhole. Two silk bows are placed at the shoulders. Stand-up collar,5 cm deep is finished on each side with a pearl and glass beaded bow motif- 6cm in diameter. Hook and eye fasteners down front-metal loops covered with button hole stitch. Bodice boned with thirteen (13) ''bones''. Each pocket finished with a fan pattern stitching. Linen panel, with a diamond shaped weave stitched at each underarm. Front bodice is pleated from shoulders to centre front. Right front laps across left to fasten with a hook on the left shoulder. This panel is heavily beaded with glass beads and sequins. The Northern District School of Nursing opened in 1950 in to address the issues around nurse recruitment, training and education that had previously been hospital based. The residential school was to provide theoretical and in-house education and practical training over three years. The students would also receive practical hands-on training in the wards of associated hospitals. The Northern District School of Nursing operated from Lister House, Rowan Street, Bendigo.
