Clothing - MAGGIE BARBER COLLECTION: FOUR LACE COLLARS, Late 1800's
Clothing. Four Collars a. Stand-up lace collar with a shallow scallop at the lower neck edge-6 cm -7 cm deep. Three ''stand-up'' flower motifs and other flat floral motifs form the lace. Five boned and wired casings keep the collar erect. At the centre lower edge fine, cotton fabric is gathered tightly and forms a 10 cm long, fan shaped drop or jabot which in turn has a shield shaped crochet drop 12.5 cm deep with corded and cut-work elements. The stand-up collar is lined with fine cotton net, and fastens at the back with three metal hooks, but no loops are evident. b. Very fine creamy silk (?) stand-up collar. 4.5 cm deep, with a 32 cm deep jabot front. The same lace as the collar, edges the Vshaped front jabot. In the centre of this jabot is a stylized maltese cross, which also features at the front of the collar. No fastenings are visible at the neckline. c.This item is of the same design as 14.b, but is slightly larger.Cream cotton or silk, the collar is 6 cms deep at the centre front, and features a Maltese Cross shape at the centre front of the collar, and the jabot front. Ten floral motifs are spaced around the collar, and the same lace outlines the edges of the jabot front. No fastenings are evident. d. Collar. 8.5 cm deep at the centre back, shaped to 6.5 cm deep at the centre front. Jabot 2 cm wide at top, 10.5 cm wide at lower edge, then shaped to a point at the very lower edge. Floral elements and eyelets form the design. Centre back has six eyelets at each edge-perhaps laced to fasten. Clothing - MAGGIE BARBER COLLECTION: COLLAR AND DETACHED SLEEVES, Late 1800's
Clothing. Ladies' collar. Net fabric, entirely sewn into 'pin-tucks' .5 cm deep in the high stand-up collar, and increasing to 7.5 cm at the lower edge of the jabot front. Opening at the back, the jabot is fastened by nine metal hooks, and hand-stitched loops. Collar has a tightly gathered double frill of the tulle fabric, at neck and is held up right by five 'covered' 'bones'. The lower edge of the front and back is edged with a 1.5 cm wide silk fabric frill. Centre lower edge of back has two 59 cm long silk ribbon ties. This ribbon is also attached to the lower edge of the jabot 58 cm and 60 cm long - presumably for the wearer to tie firmly in place. Neckline seam is re-inforced and neatened by an organdie type fabric, hand-stitched in place. Two fine elastic loops (now perished) one 52 cm, one 58 cm would once have helped to hold the jabot in place, with the arms passing through the loops, to keep the jabot in place. Detached sleeves. Net fabric, entirely sewn into .5 cm tucks. Reaching from the wrist to above the elbow. A double net frill edges the wrists, where a 6.5 cm opening, fastens with metal hooks and hand-stitched loops. A cotton tape, .5 cm wide neatens and re-infrces this seam, and a row of chain stitch, in silk thread embellishes the outer side of the seam. Clothing - MAGGIE BARBER COLLECTION: BOLERO, Late 1800s
Clothing. Guipure lace and spotted tulle bolero with sleeves. The 8cm cuffs of the sleeves are also guipure lace. The lace is of a floral design with tiny looped picots separating the floral motifs. Sleeves are of spotted tulle (.7 cm spots). The back of the bolero is shallow - just 26 cm deep, while the front dips to two peaks in the centre front.From shoulder to lower edge is 44 cms. Clothing. Dark olive green fabric,(possibly cotton) with a sueded feel, bracelet length gloves. In between the fingers (on the side of the fingers)the gloves have panels of dark olive kid leather. At the top of the glove, on the outer side, the fabric is pleated, to give a rounded effect. A flat bow 6 cms from side to side, trims the curve. Clothing - MAGGIE BARBER COLLECTION: DARK CREAM SHORT/WRIST LENGTH LEATHER GLOVES, Early 1900's
Clothing. Wrist length, dark cream, machine stitched leather gloves. Machine stitching-two rows, gives the effect of pin-tucks, are sewn in a diagonal direction from the outer wrist, across the back of the hand. The shorter outer stitching, 4 cm long has two 6mm long leather stitches, at right angle to the machine stitching. The second diagonal stitching runs around the top of the glove, and 9.5 cms across the back of the hand. It is offset with three 6 mm stitches at right angles. Clothing - MAGGIE BARBER COLLECTION: HONEY COLOURED LEATHER WRIST LENGTH GLOVES, 1920-30's
Clothing. Made from soft lambskin, the leather appears to be finely punched all over, giving the appearance of tiny pin holes over the outer surface, but not showing through to the inside. Finely bound at the top edge, and around a 3 cm long round split at the outer wrist. The inside of the leather has a brushed finish-soft and warm. Three rows of stitching on the back of the hand, and around the wrist give a decorative effect.Inside left glove 'LAMBSKINS. Made in Italy. Clothing. Curved ''cup-shape'' bodice, unlined, shirred slightly at the centre, and measuring 28 cm deep, from shoulder strap to midriff. A V shaped panel is inserted into the back bodice - 37 cm x 13.5 cm at the top to give a filled effect. Eight covered buttons and loops form the closure at the top of this panel (one button missing). Clothing. Beautiful cream lace in a deep curve (which possibly may have been the front or back) extending over the shoulders, into two long peaks- possibly a deep, V neckline. The lace has diamond shapes, woven in groups of four in a larger diamond shape, and also in a Maltese Cross type grouping. These appear to be ''fillers'' between circular shapes, 6 cm in diameter, of four-petalled flowers''. The outer edge has a scalloped effect, each with a Maltese Cross'' type filler. Object. Circular crocheted lace medallions - 16.5 cm in the front, 7 medallions in the back, one of which at the top of the back would possibly fold over the top if required. Eighteen small (1.75 cm) diameter, double petalled floral motifs form the 'handle'. Clothing. Fine cream silk in a 8 pointed star shape, in the centre of the handkerchief - 15 cm diameter. Fine silk lace, 10 cm deep, surrounds this centrepiece. Adjoining the star shape is a one cm wide border, surrounded by 1.5 cm flowers, identical to those in the matching collar(11414.26). A Maltese Cross design in each corner brings the piece to a square shape. This joins fine lace in a flower and leaf design, with the Maltese Cross design in each corner, and at centre of each side. Clothing. Deep cream silk centre piece, with scalloped edges - 18 cm x 16 cm. (Scallops 6.5 cm wide). Cream linen bobbin lace - (probably Brussells Lace) surrounds the silk-9cms deep at each corner, 3.5 cms deep at the sides. Fan shapes woven in the lace, emphasize the scalloped centrepiece. Flowers as in 11414.26 and 11414.30a and b, would suggest that this lace has been made by the same maker. Clothing. Cotton crotched edging 6 cms wide. What appears to be the two armhole edgings - 6 cms wide, are joined by what may have been yoke inserts, or neckline edging. However the width of this panel -38 cms, does seem extremely wide. This joining panel-all crocheted in one piece, has an opening edge at what was possibly the back of the garment, Circular motifs, 2.5 cm in diameter, have plain border on the inner edge, and a more decorative edging, 2.5 cm wide on the outer edge. Textiles. Two doyleys, rectangular in shape, and made from net fabric. Outer edges are cut in a zig-zag shape - 2.5 cms long edges ^^. These edges are outlined by a double row of white corded thread. The doyleys are decorated with a large ''snow-flake'' shape in the centre-made with four rows of cording thread.
