The Northern District School of Nursing opened in 1950 in to address the issues around nurse recruitment, training and education that had previously been hospital based. The residential school was to provide theoretical and in-house education and practical training over three years. The students would also receive practical hands-on training in the wards of associated hospitals. The Northern District School of Nursing operated from Lister House, Rowan Street, Bendigo. There are many drawings and photos accompanying the information relating to the various areas and buildings researched in this book. Vision AustraliaMap - Object, Brailled Map of Europe, 1939
This tactile map of Europe was created in 1939, and brailled by the Queensland Braille Map and Model Club. Cut and mounted by G. Vann with geographical inforamtion provided by Miss E Southern. The Queensland Braille Map and Model Club was a volunteer organisation which produced tactile maps from the 1920s to the late 1940s. These were sent as presents to schools, organisations and missions for people who were blind or vision impaired around Australia, New Zealand, Syria, India, Canada, Papua New Guinea and Africa. Due to free postage of Braille obtained by Tilly Aston and her compatriots, the maps were transported gratis within Australia and at a cheap rate overseas. When this map was made, East Prussia, Danzig and the Levant States were all separate countries. Some information about each country (name, area in sq miles and population) is written on a small door on the right hand side, which can be opened to reveal the same information in Braille. At the base is a braille and handwritten note "Information about maps gratis from Miss E Southern "Kingsley" George St, Brisbane. This photograph is one of approximately 43 original photographs and photocopies of buildings, patients and staff assembled in a red covered, spirally bound photograph album (the album itself is now discarded and the images stored separately). The images in the album cover the period from the 1870s to 1965. A few photographs have inscriptions on the reverse; others had later separate labels in the album. The album was presumably compiled as a public record. It and other items came from the collection assembled by Dr Fred Stamp, the last medical superintendent of Willsmere Hospital before its closure in 1988. Original photographs have been uploaded to and described on Victorian Collections. The album itself is listed and linked separately showing the photographs in situ.A number of the photographs from the Willsmere Hospital album are confronting, especially given the condition of the buildings and facilities depicted, as well as the casual photographs of patients, which some viewers may find distressing. This history was put together by Legatee Ron Crosbie, branch secretary 1959-1963, 1968-1974 and 1995-1999. Appendix 4 gives an account of where the information was sourced from. This short history deails the formation until the branch combined with the Williamstown/Werribee branch to form The Western Branch. In quite some detail Ron Crosbie describes the gathering together of several Legatees to form the new branch. Also the change in priorities to be addressed as the years passed - the widows grew older, their needs changed, their children grew up and left school to be apprenticed, tertiary studies or other work. Details of members inducted, office bearers, activities to help widows and families, fund raising and not to forget, some good stories are all accounted for in this history and the appendices.A thorough account of the work of Legacy and Legatees and the support of many Legatees wives at branch level.
