Joynt's long association with Melbourne Legacy was celebrated at the Comradeship Hour at Legacy House on Tuesday 24 October 1989, two years after his death and just before the transfer of his uniform to the War Museum in Canberra. The address was given by Legatee Fred Holdsworth and followed by the complete citation from Joynt's V.C. award. See also Cat No. 01599. The photograph show legatees posing with the uniform that belonged to Legatee Joynt after an address commemorating Donovan Joynt VC on 24th October 1989. The army uniform was at Legacy House just before it was donated to the Australian War Museum in Canberra. An article published in the Melbourne Legacy Bulletin about the event contained the address given by L/ Holdsworth (01599). Other photos at 01604 show Legatee Holdsworth can be seen reading from the album which was compiled about the life of L/ Joynt VC (Cat.No. 01588). In 1969 RMIT lecturer Gerard Herbst arranged an exhibition the work of his Industrial Design students at the NGV’s Design Centre. In ‘Design with Paper' the students explored the characteristics of a sheet of paper, an exercise based on similar ones set by Josef Albers at the Bauhaus, Germany and Black Mountain College, USA. The exhibition attracted press attention, Bulletin critic Brian Hoad noting You are told that in the tradition of Gropius and his Bauhaus experiments of the ‘twenties they are attempting to bridge the gulf between the fine arts and the technical crafts to produce one day from among their numbers a new type of creative thinker. Letters hand written by Jack, concerning primarily his observations of steam locomotives and trains in the Ballarat area, with some references to his health, trams, replacement of steam locomotives by diesels (which he did not like). John Southern lived in NSW and was a well known collector of information and photographer on Australian steam locomotives; wrote articles for the ARHS Bulletin and other publications. On first letter, Wal notes he was involved in an industrial accident at the Ballarat Gun Cotton factory in 1943 which severely affected his health. Advertising for a sculpture of an Australian Digger that was produced as a commemorative piece by a Melbourne firm called Ceramic Innovations. It is filled with Tawny Port and is part of a wider set of bar pieces. The three pieces held at Melbourne Legacy are tributes to the three armed forces and are called 'Digger', 'RAAFIE' and 'Jack Tar'. They were once in the comradeship room and now stored in the archive. An advertising flyer found shows the RRP was $110 with $5 of each 'Digger' being donated to Legacy Australia. There was a special price for Legacy members of $78.95 so this brochure may have been distributed with the Answer or Bulletin. Photos from a Comradeship album showing an outdoor gathering of Legatees and their wives for a social event. It appears to be at Stanhope from other events that were held there. Photos show men in chefs hats and people sitting under picnic umbrellas. In 1975 the Bulletin mentions a BBQ for legatees at Stanhope, it may have been an annual event. The Comradeship committee, including Fred Holdsworth gathered photos of events and compiled them in a Comradeship photo album for Legatees to look through. They were removed from the self adhesive pages of a photo album of Comradeship activities (from 1930 to 1977).The Comradeship photo album was put together by the Comradeship committee and records events that Legatees did and places they lived or visited. Some appear to be trips to visit other Legatees living overseas and social occasions held in different places. Photograph of Queen Elizabeth II on a state visit to Melbourne in February 1963 receiving flowers from Christine Kelson, a junior legatee. An article in the Legacy's Weekly Bulletin on 26 February mentions the details. Christine was 14 years old and daughter of the late Signaller Arthur Kelson who served with the 9th division in Middle East and who was taken prisoner in North Africa and made a POW in Italy and Germany. Her mother Mrs Dorothy Kelson, served with the AMWAS. Supplement to the Melbourne Legacy Bulletin No. 2463 which discusses how the Club should be structured after 1979, dated 27/6/79. It notes that the number of children being cared for was diminishing rapidly and immediate action should be taken with regard to the recruitment of Legatees and the adjustment of Branch boundaries. In 1978 the number of Junior Legatees had dropped to 3103 and by 1988 this figure was expected to be 280. However the 16,654 Legacy widows in 1978 was expected to increase to 24,700 in 1993. The work was split between 15 Branches, but the adjustment of Branch boundaries was not investigated in detail. A document recording the history of the Intermediate Legacy Ladies Club (ILLC). It was put together by Legatee Chas Wilks for publication in the Bulletin for the information of Legatees. It starts with the formation of the early girls' classes in 1927. Then the older girls formed the 'Old Girls Club' which then was renamed 'Intermediate Legacy Ladies Club' (ILLC) in 1955. At the time it was printed, they had been meeting for 34 years and fundraising for Legacy. They ran Special Efforts Bowls mornings, card afternoons, house parties, crazy whist nights, and produced a recipe book. An article written by Legatee Bill Rogers about volunteers, led by Beryl Billing, who process used stamps for sale to fundraise for Legacy. The article may have appeared in the Bulletin. It acknowledged the huge amount of work Beryl had done over the years. Beryl's husband was a Legatee with Dandenong/West Gippsland Group (now called South Eastern). Beryl started the stamp group in February 1981 and over 27 years the stamp group raised $208,698.
