Document - Northern District School of Nursing First Annual Report of Committee of Management, 1951
The Northern District School of Nursing opened in 1950 to address the issues around nurse recruitment, training and education that had previously been hospital based. The residential school was to provide theoretical and in-house education and practical training over three years. The students would also receive practical hands-on training in the wards of associated hospitals. The Northern District School of Nursing operated from Lister House, Rowan Street, Bendigo. It was the first independent school of nursing in Victoria and continued until it closed in 1989.Printed booklet of sixteen pages with soft cardboard sea green cover faded to mustard brown. Photograph - Bones Day - Army Survey Regiment Versus RAAF School of Radio. Fortuna, Bendigo, 1978
These eight photographs were taken at Bones Day, an annual sports competition between the Army Survey Regiment and the RAAF School of Radio at Bendigo in November 1978. The two units took turns each year to host the event. The day competition usually comprised basketball, cross country, golf, sailing, squash, softball, tennis, touch football, rifle shooting, tug-of-war and volleyball. The “big bone” trophy comprising a large bone from a beast housed inside a wooden framed glass case, was awarded to the winner of the day competition. The evening competition often included darts, carpet bowls, hookey, quoits and billiards/snooker. The “little bone” (a mounted chicken bone) was the consolation trophy awarded to the winner of the evening competition. The 3-hour bus trip for the visiting unit on their return was typically very raucous. The history of the Bones Day competition is best described in the booklet titled - Bones of Contention Souvenir Program. 1965. Refer to Item 6267. Glen Jones was born in Bendigo on September 10, 1934. He graduated from Bendigo High School in 1951 and then attended Bendigo Teachers' College. He began his teaching career as an Art, Craft and Woodwork teacher in Rochester in 1955. Biographical notes provided by Glen's family are attached as a media file.Photo album with red fabric cover containing water colour paintings created by Glen Jones depicting buildings of Bendigo. Each water colour painting is mounted on coloured card with descriptive labels attached. This book is part of a collection of books, photos and memorabilia donated from the Chatham-Holmes family collection. This was a school book of Edith Pickford who attended the Higher Elementary School at Clunes, Victoria.This green cloth-covered, hard backed book has the title, publisher and an art deco design printed in gold on the spine. A leather look design is impressed into the front and back covers. Opposite the title page is the Editor's Note and both pages have an ornate intertwining flower, thistle and leaf design border around the printing.The book has 596 pages plus some pages of 'List for Reference' from 'The People's Library'.Written in pencil on inside cover - Edith Pickford H.E.S. The man photographed is Spyrdonos K.Theofilatou (Kapoti Petala), b1889 - d1977, possibly from the village of Perachori, Ithaca. He graduated from the Ithacan Naval Secondary College in the school year 1912 -1913 and studied at in (Constantinople) Istanbul. He later settled in the US in Miami, Florida and was a successful businessman. A sepia portrait photograph of a man who is wearing a spotted bow tie with his suit. Details about the photo are written on the back in Greek. -

The photo is of Olga Kouvaras who was born in Sydney, the first child of Telemahos and Erasmia Kouvaras who both migrated from Ithaca. Olga attended Sydney Girls High School and was a keen and talented student of the music and in particular the piano. However with the shadow of WW2 she was compelled to leave school to work in her parent’s café. Following her marriage to John Cosmas in 1953, Olga settled in Melbourne and they had three children- Kosmas, Erasmia and Dallas. A scanned black and white photograph of a school girl dressed in school uniform. She is wearing a standard three pleated tunic, white blouse and dark tie. Newspaper - OLD VIOLET SHAFT - VIOLET STREET VOLCANO
Bendigo Advertiser Thursday, May 11, 1967, article of an old mine shaft burning on the corner of Pitt and Old Violet Street. It was filled to a depth of about 20 feet with sawdust and rubbish and caught alight on Anzac night when a bonfire got out of control and was still burning on May 10. Some attempts have been made to put it out but had failed. There was concern for children playing in the area.
