A civic campaign for new public offices developed in Kew in the 1880s. After much deliberation, the location chosen was the junction of Bulleen and Cotham Roads. The buildings were designed by George Watson and John Henry Harvey, architects within the Department of Public Works (Victoria). Building was commenced in 1887, and after one year, the buildings were opened. The Post Office was transferred to the new Commonwealth Government in 1901. The Police Station and Court House, sold by the Victorian Government to the City of Boroondara in 2007, are now a community cultural centre and performing arts venue.The buildings were listed on the Victorian Heritage Register Register (HO885) in 1991. They are historically and architecturally significant to the State of Victoria because Watson and Harvey's designs exhibit diversity in integrating civil offices, they accommodate the apex of road junctions, and they demonstrate a departure from the contemporaneously favoured High Victorian Classical to the Queen Anne style in the design of civic buildings. 35mm colour transparency of a painted decorative feature used at the Kew Court House on the corner of High Street and Cotham Road. This British made type "N1087" and code "N1087" C Ericsson auto flameproof telephone was used in the drum filling platform of the Golden Fleece Depot, in Hovell St., Wodonga. The type "N1087" and code "N1087" C Ericsson flameproof telephone was introduced in 1937 and certified by the British Mines Department as flameproof for Petroleum and Acetone Vapours, in 1938. It was designed specifically for outdoor use in areas where there may be exposure to inflammable vapours and hazardous chemicals such as petroleum. Installed in the Westgarth Shopping Strip, the artworks include aerial, street level and inlaid pieces. The aerial installations consist of eight pairs of steel dragonfly wings. The street level series feature ten sculptural pieces of welded steel depicting enlarged body/skeletal parts of fauna that are indigenous to the area. Edward Miller started his business in Meriden, Connecticut, in the 1840's making and selling camphene and burning fluid burners. By the 1860's, Edward Miller had become an aggressive competitior in the lamp business. Edward Miller died in 1909 at the age of 82.
