Spinning Wheel
Part of the Zakrzewski Collection of spinning wheels donated to the National Wool Museum by Mr Wlodzimierz Zakrzewski. For many years, Mr Zakrzewski collected, researched and repaired spinning wheels from all over the world. This spinning wheel is English and is made mainly from oak. It dates from the late 19th century and has elements of Chinoiserie in its design. It was originally bought from Portobello Road, London in quite poor condition and was later exchanged by Mr Eric Corran (a manufacturer of looms and spinning wheels) for a spinning wheel in working order. Mr Corran later sold it to Mr Zakrzewski who restored it.Part of the Zakrzewski Spinning Wheel collection.handicrafts - history, spinning wheels, highlights of the national wool museum: the zakrzewski spinning wheel collection - exhibition (28/07/2001 - 02/12/2001), zakrzewski, mr wlodzimierz -

Photograph, Fred Lyons and his hansom cab
This is one of a series of photos donated by Arthur Lyons. From 1907 a cab service operated from near the railway gates in Union Road. It was established and maintained by Mr C Fraser until c1916. George Rea either took over then or set up in opposition. Fred Lyons initially worked for George until he set up his own business. In time he changed over to a motor vehicle and continued his service until 1960. Frederick Adolphus Lyons (1891-1980) was born in Surrey Hills, son of Thomas and Catherine Lyons. He married Elizabeth Ruby Hall in 1918. They lived just around the corner at 55 Sunbury Crescent. The Lyons’ home in Sunbury Crescent was called ‘Knopshambury’ - this was probably a misspelling of Knockshanbally in Co Kilkenny, the birth place of Fred’s father, Thomas Edmund Josias Lyons (1846-1915). Arthur Lyons was born in Surrey Hills on 12 Jun 1920. He became a motor mechanic / welder and lived at 55 Sunbury Crescent. The donation was made while he was in hospital. He died shortly afterwards (23 Sep 1990). Donation was finalised by a neighbour, Mrs Florence Ann Armitstead, wife of Glen Victor Armitstead. Glen was a local hairdresser. They moved to 11 Sunbury Crescent after their marriage in 1939. Arthur had no relatives to distribute the material to.Black and white photo of Fred Lyons with his hansom cab, taken between 1916-1920. It shows a horse harnessed to the cab, the door of which is open so that the buttoned seat is visible. The cab has large lamps on each side. Mr Lyons, in hat, is standing on the back of the cab. There is a large brick wall of a building to the right of the cab with a mature tree beside it and houses can be seen behind the cab. horse-drawn vehicles, carriages and coaches, fred lyons, george rea, frederick adolphus lyons -

Photograph - Image, W.H. Paterson - Blind Cricketers of Australia, 1957
When the Victorian Blind Cricket Association approached Mr Paterson for assistance in gaining access to a permanent cricket pitch upon which games could be played, it set in chain a series of events that remain in place today. Mr Paterson had been heavily involved in the formation of the Association for the Blind and saw this as a problem to be solved. Raising money through public donation and door knocking, Mr Paterson arranged the purchase of land on the banks of Gardiner's Creek, and adjacent to the tram and train lines. The land was raised, to avoid flooding, and a surface prepared. The sportsground was adjacent to the AAB, however due to the interest of Malvern Council in the land and knowing that the AAB at that time was in financial difficulties, a Trust was set up to handle the management with Mr Paterson, Mr Gould the Malvern Council Town Clerk and George Maxwell as trustees. A clubhouse was also needed to allow players to take shelter during matches and once again, Mr Paterson came to the rescue. Using their personal funds, Mr and Mrs Paterson loaned the Trust the monies required for the building. This plaque recognises the dedication and support that Mr Paterson gave to help establish the first blind cricket playing ground in Australia.Digital image of metal plaqueErected to the Memory of W.H. Photograph, White Cottage Young Street Bacchus Marsh 1883
This four roomed cottage with a detached kitchen was built for a Mr Elam, c. 1867. Occupants of this house among others have been Sir George Farmer, Christopher Crisp, Joseph Voysey, E. Simpson, J.R. Crook and H. Condon. It is located in Young Street and is opposite the site where the original Bacchus Marsh Mechanics Institute stood until about 1995.Small sepia unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. Housed in the album, 'Photographs of Bacchus Marsh and District in 1883 by Stevenson and McNicoll'. The photograph is of a neat Georgian-style, double-fronted cottage. The hip roof and verandah are roofed with wooden shingles. Two tall chimneys stand, one at either side of the cottage, while a smaller chimney can be seen at the rear. The front verandah is decorated with carved barge boards. A white picket fence runs along the front, the entry posts featuring a carved globe-shaped finial. Standing inside the front fence is a smartly dressed gentleman, leaning on the fence. This is possibly Mr Joseph Voysey, Head Master of Bacchus Marsh Primary School 1879-1888, who purchased this cottage in 1882, the year before this photo was taken. Two women, one with a dog at her feet, stand on the footpath with a young girl holding a doll. This cottage still stands in Young Street, Bacchus Marsh. On the front: Stevenson & McNicoll.
