Carnival is an important annual event in the Southern Provinces of The Netherlands with each village often having its own Carnival Club and traditions. The Dutch People from the Southern Provinces continued in many cases this tradition and formed their regional Carnavals Clubs in Australia. Each Carnaval Club has a Council of Eleven with its own colourful uniform, including a hat. This head protector seems to have first appeared in the 1920s when the issue of safety became a concern. Since that time, head protection has developed more sophistication.This is a particularly good example of an attempt at safety for cyclists. The hat belonged to Edna Vlassopoulos of Bulla and Sunbury. It was purchased to wear at a family wedding.A steel blue mohair and felt lady's hat with an upturned brim which is trimmed with blue fake fur. This dress was hand crocheted by Miss Muriel 'Dolly' Williamson, who was noted for her skill at handicrafts and her sense of fashion. Throughout her life she hand made many of her own clothes and enjoyed wearing them to local social events. She had a large collection of hand knitted and crocheted clothes, most of which were dispersed amongst her friends when she finally went into a nursing home. The donation of this dress was facilitated by Ms Julia Fry from Community Options Barwon who is Miss Williamson's case worker. This dress is typical of the style of the 1960s, with its bright colours and long line. The Kew Historical Society’s fashion and design collection is comprised of costumes, hats, shoes and personal accessories. Many of these items were purchased or handmade in Victoria; some locally in Kew. The extensive hat collection comprises items dating from the 1860s to the 1970s. While most of the hats in the collection were created by milliners for women, there are a number of early and important men’s hats in the collection. The headwear collection is particularly significant in that it includes the work of notable Australian and international milliners.Wide brimmed straw woman’s hat banded at the crown and on the rim with black ribbon. The queen bee cage is designed to hold a queen bee, and up to three or four escort worker bees. The design allows for adequate ventilation, and has a spot for 'queen candy' -candied honey- to block one end. The queen is placed in her new hive inside the cage, and once the queen candy has been eaten through -allowing her access to the hive- the hive has become accustomed to her smell and accept her.
