Document - McGrath history 8th ALH
William McGrath enlisted as a Trooper in the 8th Light Horse in 1915. He rose to the rank of Squadron Sergeant Major and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant on Gallipoli. McGrath served throughout the war with 8th Light Horse Regiment progressing through the officer ranks. This history was compiled from personal knowledge and the war diary of the regiment. Medallion is in commemoration of the men of ANZAC at GALLIPOLI in 1915 and in recognition of the great debt owed by all Australians. With the compliments of the Government of Australia. Depicts the original quadrangle building, decked out with celebratory flags. A large crowd listens to the dignitaries as the school is officially opened. This photo was taken shortly before the regiment embarked for overseas. The 8th Light Horse Regiment AIF was raised at Broadmeadows Victoria in September 1914 under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Alexander White and formed part of the 3rd Light Horse Brigade. It departed Melbourne 15 February 1915. The regiment served at Gallipoli where in a courageous but ill-fated charge at the Nek on 7 August 1915 it suffered horrendous casualties including Lieutenant Colonel White. Rebuilt in Egypt under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Leslie Maygar VC the regiment went on the serve throughout the Middle East Campaign. Colonel Maygar died of wounds at Beersheba when the regiment was attacked by enemy aircraft while waiting to follow up the successful charge of the 4th LH Brigade on 30 October 1917. The 8th Light Horse AIF was disbanded in 1919, but soon after re-raised as the 8th (Indi) Light Horse in the Citizen Military Forces, superseding 16th (Indi) Light Horse. It had its headquarters at Benalla with sub-units throughout the Upper Murray and Northeast Victoria. In December 1941, the regiment converted from horse to mechanised, initially as 8th Reconnaissance Battalion then in July 1942 it became 8th Cavalry Regiment and served in Northern Territory. The Kew tram depot is located on the corner of Barkers Road and High Street, Kew. It is one of eight tram depots on the Melbourne tram network. The depot opened on 8 May 1915. The main yard has 12 covered roads. There are two tracks for trams leaving or entering via Barkers Road, and a single track connecting to High Street.Postcard produced c.1991 to commemorate 75 Years of Service of The Kew Depot (1915/16-1991). Albert Thomas Holden was born in 1866 at Geelong, died in 1935 and is buried in Boroondara cemetery. From 1883-84 he taught in Kyneton and became a Methodist lay preacher. He graduated with a B.A. from Ormond College in 1888. He entered the Methodist ministry and worked in Burwood and at the Omeo Home Mission. During 1892 he toured Europe and the Middle East with Rev Bickford. In 1898 Holden was an army chaplain and served South Africa. He became Methodist Chaplain General in 1913. In 1904 Holden became Secretary of Methodist Home Missions and traveled throughout Australia. Holden was General Superintendent of the Methodist Church of Australasia from 1929 - 1932 and then President- General. Holden became a Freemason in 1898.
