James Garland Colliver lived and worked in Linton between 1863 and 1875, when he moved to Donald. He was actively involved in Linton's business and community life. (See Colliver family file at LDHS.) This photograph may show two adjacent business premises on the east side of Sussex Street, north of Clyde Street: Edwin Ball or Ball Brothers, blacksmiths, and J.G. Colliver, "Machinist". The Ball and Colliver families were related and are understood to have worked collaboratively. This certificate was issued to register William Todd as the owner of a residence area at Allotment 28, Section 4, Linton. This land was held under Miner's Right No. 93197. The certificate was issued at Smythesdale on December 2nd by John Lynch, Mining Registrar. Miner's Right No. 93917, 18 September 1886. The Todd family's first home is believed to have been at this site in Grantley Street. The photograph is undated but a black and white copy in the 'Linton School - Photos' file is dated c.1905. Head Teacher at this time was A.J. Horan, and he is probably the male teacher in the photograph, wearing a suit, on RHS. Formally situated on the first floor of the Ballarat goal building. Currently situated at the Historic Precinct, Brooke Street, Smythesdale. In 2005 Mr Butler approached the Woady Yaloak Historical Society asking if we would like to become the new caretakers of the Gallows because of our historical connection. Four of the first five men executed on the gallows were from the Woady Yaloak area. The Todd family lived in this house in the early 1900s. The house was next door to the butcher's shop which was run by members of the Todd family at the time. Stella Todd is the small child on the right of the photograph, whose hand is being held by her older sister (who is possibly Millie Todd). Slaughterhouse Hill was so named because Bennett's butchers had a slaughterhouse there.A view of Linton taken from Slaughterhouse Hill to the north-east of the town.
