Leather, oval shaped hat box (in which is stored a men's silk top hat - 11400.834). Lined in blue velvet, and blue silk. Looped handle, 29cm long, attached with 2.5cm circular metal studs - possibly brass. An oval shaped insert, lined with blue velvet and silk, hold the inverted top hat. This hat was owned by John Sargood ( refer enclosed notes) whose initials are marked on trhe hat-box - J.S. - two cms high. An internal strap of black fabric, has a leather tab at one end with a metal key shaped fastener. Unfortunately the other end is broken off. This strap would hold the hat in the cavity. An outer leather strap, 4cm wide passes over the lid, and fastens at a 6.5cm diameter, circular metal disk with key lock. End of this strap is also broken - a piece of leather is inside the hat box. Bendigo Advertiser "The way we were" from 1999. Eaglehawk: this photo is looking south over the Borough of Eaglehawk in 1875. After gold was discovered in Golden Square, it was inevitable prospectors would cut their way through the bush to what is now known as Eaglehawk. The legend says two prospectors in 1852, John Rooke and Joseph Crook, were looking for one of their horses, which had gone astray, when they stopped to rest. Where they stopped they found gold. After three weeks of digging, Crook and Rooke left the area with a massive 48 pounds in gold weight. Copy of an article from the Bendigo Weekly 30/12/1999 Discover Bendigo by James Lerk titled John Emery and His Associates. John Emery was a tailor who had a business in Raywood. He moved to Bendigo where he set up his business as a tailor, draper and clothing mercer at the corner of Pall Mall and Mitchell Street. The shop was close to the Beehive Exchange, where he invested in the quartz mining companies. He took on a partner, T S Gibson, who was a clothier. Emery was involved in the Bendigo Bowling Club and St Paul's Church. Later he travelled and became a collector of curios. He donated sculptures to the Bendigo Art Gallery and loaned a number of paintings. Clothing. Possibly, a cardboard horse shoe shape, covered in 3 cm wide satin ribbon. On the face of the horse shoe 1.2 cm wide satin ribbon has been ruched to give a ''zig zag'' effect. A loop of the 1.2 cm wide ribbon, 20.5 cm long, would pass over the wrist. A small silk flower, with stamen at the centre trims the lower edge of the horse shoe. Gran Wearne was born in Cornwall and married a miner, Thomas Wearne. They migrated to Bendigo And has six children of which three survived. She lost her husband and had to rely on charity to maintain her family. She earned a little money by selling goat's milk. She died in 1936 and was the last person who spoke English with a Cornish dialect. Also contains some information about William 'Clubs" Wearne, her son, who also became a miner. Front of the bodice extends in wide 8 cms wide straps, which cross over at the back, and fasten with a button and buttonhole to the back waistband. The skirt of the apron extends right around the body, and overlaps, and fastens with two buttons and buttonholes 14 cms overlap.
