A German participant's account of the naval battle between the disguised German Raider HSK "Kormoran", and the Australian Light Cruiser HMAS "Sydney" off the West Australian Coast, Both vessels sank. The "Sydney" with all hands. The account follows his time in the lifeboat, his rescue, time in hospital in Perth then as Prisoner of War in Camp 13, Murchison, Vic.The author Dahm is listed as a crew member of HSK "Kormoran", and as a Prisoner of War in the National Australian Archives. Mervyn 'Banjo' Harris (born 4/3/1914) was the eldest son of Walter 'Bob' and Zillah Harris of Bendigo. He enlisted in the C.M.F. 8th L.H. February 1937. No V22764. He enlisted in the A.I.F. 7th January 1941 when the 8th light horse disbanded. He was then posted to he 143 P.O.W. camp Murchison. He was made a Sgt. at Geelong.Paper Certificate with Australian military forces logo and some slight ageing evident. Reads: Australian Military forces Certificate of Discharge certificate no. 66757 This is to certify that v22764 Sgt Mervyn Sylvester Walter Harris- 6 Aust. Aux. House fnanopant cay who enlisted for the C.M.F on the 25th day of Nov 1939 and who served on continuous full time war service in the Citizen Military Forces for a total effective period of nine hundred and fifty four days which included active service in Australia for 748 days outside Australia for [0] days is discharged from the Citizen military Forces during that service or by virtue of that service the soldier was awarded or became eligible for [no] medals and decorations [no] war badge. this discharge takes effect on and from the first day of may one thousand nine hundred and forty four. In the top left hand corner of the photograph you can see the LLAMBERIS House built by Joseph Gundry. It was thought that later the property was sold and Roderick Impey Murchison was the buyer,he later offered it for sale in 1885 and later that year A N Hassall invited tenders for lots of Liamberis.C j Cook was the listed owner in 1888 ( land of the Magpie) -

For security reasons, tokens were used in Australian WW11 Internment Camps. They were introduced in 19433 to replace the paper canteen coupons. This token was used at the internment camp at Bete Bolong just outside Orbost during WW11. This camp was established in 1943 and was there until 1946. The internees had been transferred from the camp at Murchison East to provide farm labour. The coin was given to Lindsay Thomson when he was a student.This token was used at the Bete Bolong POW camp from 1943-1945. This camp housed Italian POWs, some of whom remained/returned after the war to settle in Orbost.An internment camp coin. This is a one penny coin token with a hole in the centre.
