These volumes reproduce the diary material and the landscapes and sketches of Charles La Trobe, the Superintendent of the Port Phillip District of New South Wales ( 1839- 1851) and Lieutenant Governor of the colony of Victoria ( 1851-54 ). La Trobe is regarded as the man most responsible for the establishment of Warrnambool in 1847. His diaries document his trips to the Warrnambool region in 1845, 1846, 1848 and 1849 before and after the town site was settled.These volumes are of artistic significance being beautifully and expensively produced. The volumes contain information of vital importance to our knowledge of our early Warrnambool history. Other important details in the diary include information on early shipwrecks and the first settlers in our district in our district, especially the Allan brothers..1 This is a burgundy leather bound book of 380 pages. Charles Todd was one of the pioneers of meteorology in Australasia. Sir Charles Todd (1826-1910) was an astronomer, meteorologist and electrical engineer. Much of the history of astronomy, meteorology and telegraphs in South Australia is contained in his reports to parliament between 1856 and 1900.This is a useful research tool.A large sheet of lined card with a printed alphabetical list of South Australian towns and hand-written details of wind direction and force. An article from the Melbourne Legacy Bulletin on the death of Legatee Cyril Terence Charles Kirby, a long serving Legatee. The Bulletin published articles on Legatees when they passed away. The article includes an overview of his war service with the British as an 'Old Contemptible' in World War 1. Also with the Docks and Movement Control in Melbourne during World War 2. He met his wife Priscilla Wardle during World War 1 and moved to Ballarat to marry her. Priscilla was an Australian nurse serving with the QAIMNS and part of her diary is in this collection, and more is held with Ballarat and District Bast Hospital Nurses League also on Victorian Collections. He joined Legacy in Ballarat in 1929 and transferred to Melbourne Legacy in 1935. Even when his health caused him to reduce his commitments to the Reserve list he still found time to attend Legacy and spent many hours each month doing clerical work and fund raising. "Keeping everyone amused with his inexhaustible supply of 'little stories', and in a word, doing a thoroughly good Legacy job." The account of his life was written by Legatee Brian Armstrong (initials JHBA) and has a very affectionate tone. This clock was made by Charles Frederick Falck who was a watchmaker and jeweller in Beechworth from 1863-1908. Falck was born in Körlin, Prussia on May 22nd in 1833 and died at the age of 75 in 1908. Ovens and Murray Advertiser, Beechworth: edition June 13, 1908 OBITUARY: Falck was brought up to the business of watch-making, in which he developed exceptional mechanical ingenuity. Attracted by the favourable prospects held out by the Australian discoveries of gold he, like many other young adventurous spirits, left his native land to seek his fortune in the great southern Eldorado, arriving in Adelaide in 1854, and shortly after came to Melbourne where he worked as a journeyman, and subsequently started in business on his own account. Feeling inclined to test his fortune on the goldfields, he went to Blackwood but, meeting with little success, he returned to Melbourne where he was married. In 1862, he moved to Beechworth, where he commenced business as watchmaker and gold-buyer. He then embarked in vine-growing on the Sydney road, but eventually resumed his business avocations. His skill in practical horology was evinced in a clock of his own design and manufacture, surmounted by a golden eagle, which was exhibited at the first Melbourne Exhibition in 1856, and which afterwards formed a pre-eminent attraction in the window of his business premises in Ford Street. For many years, he filled the position of timekeeper to the Beechworth Racing Club, with complete satisfaction also at various sports meetings. He leaves a family of six sons and one daughter (Mrs. Jas. Broadfoot) all arrived at maturity. The funeral, which was well attended by a number of residents, took place at the Beechworth Cemetery on Sunday, the burial service being performed by the Ven. Archdeacon Potter. The cortege was capably supervised by Mr. D. Wilson, undertaker. The clock was returned to Beechworth in 2020 through the generous support of the Copland Foundation. Given that Mr. C. F. Falck traded as a watchmaker and jeweller in Beechworth for 45 years and traded with the 1855 clock mounted in his front window, there is a direct link between the clocks and the social, cultural and economic life of nineteenth century Beechworth at time when the town was developing and expanding in response to gold mining. This clock represent the significant skill and expertise of Charles Falck as an horologist. Medium-sized pendulum clock featuring a carved gilt wood eagle with wings outstretch (épandre - expanded with wing-tips directed upwards) and perched above a pendulum rod that holds a silver dial clock face within a reeded sunburst surround. The book was written by aaaaaCharles Richard Weld and was originally part of the Warrnambool Mechanics' Institute Library. The publisher firm, Longmans, Green & Co, was originally founded in 1724 in London by Thomas Longman under the name Longman. In August of that year, he bought the two shops and goods of William Taylor and set up his publishing house there at 39 Paternoster Row. The shops were called Black Swan and Ship, and it is said that the 'ship' sign was the inspiration for Longman's Logo. After many changes of name and management, including the name Longman, Green, Longman and Roberts from 1859 to 1862, The firm was incorporated in 1926 as Longmans, Green & Co. Pty Ltd. The firm was acquired by Pearson in 1968 and was known as Pearson Longman or Pearson PLC. It is important for its connection to the London publisher Longman, Green Longman Roberts, who were an extension of the Longmans, Green & Co, operating under this name from 1811 to 1823. The firm has been established for over two centuries, is renowned for publishing encyclopedias, dictionaries, books on English grammar, textbooks, poetry, reference books, novels, magazines and more. It is also significant for its association with the Warrnambool Mechanics’ Institute book collection has historical and social significance for its strong association with the Mechanics Institute movement and its important role in people's intellectual, cultural and social development throughout the latter part of the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century. The collection of books is a rare example of an early lending library and its significance is enhanced by the survival of an original collection of many volumes.
