Marriage of William George Gray to Frances Ellen Hurst. They were married at St. Mark's Church, Fitzroy in the Parish of St. Peter's, Eastern Hill, Melbourne, 12 May 1897. Frances was one of three daughteres to Francis and Catherine Hurst of Hurstbridge. William and Frances would settle in Hurstbridge and operate Allwood Nurseries. Catherine E. Heffernan pictured age 16. She was born in 1856 in Maryborough and married Frederick Hurst in 1872 at age 16 when this photo was taken. They settled in Hurstbridge where they had three daughters. Catherine died in 1943 aged 87. This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book, "Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). W.G (William George) Gray, owner of Allwood Nurseries in Hurstbridge, with horses and cart laden with trees from Kinglake from where he also had a property raising stock. Shire of Eltham Councillor Gray donated English oak and oriental trees for the Anzac avenue at Hurstbridge planted in 1918. In 1922 he operated a well cultivated property of 64 cleared acres, 56 of which were under nursery healthy stock, principally apples, peaches, plums and cherries. In addition to 4 acres of potatoes. A unique example of ”'making do” with materials available. Dated c1890..This remarkable device was skilfully made from wire - no soldering at all. The rat crawled up the ramp which tilted and tipped it into the bottom of the trap. When it tried to reach the bait in the hanging container a bell rang to inform the owner that a rat was caught.Rat Trap c1890. Hand Made plain wire construction jointed by wire lacing of wire hoops to frames. Semi circular section with flat base. Tapered entry one end leading to tilting trap, access hatch at opposite end.
