St Aidan's Orphanage, Bendigo. Black and white photograph (11.5cm x 7cm) of the construction of a building at the orphanage with three statues and rose plantings in the foreground. The words 'Bendigo Orphanage’ is written in pencil on the reverse. A small stamp, possibly with the words - by Harringtons - is over stamped with the number 3 53. This photo was probably taken in 1930-1 during the construction of the second orphanage building, two storeys and to the east of the 1905 building. Two chimneys and some of the building are still standing, the rest is a pile of twisted timber. A number of men and a couple of children are standing in the rubble, two are on the roof and two on a ladder. There are three decorative edges above the veranda, the first has Rose of, the middle has Australia and the third has Hotel painted on it. On part of the wall underneath is the name A. Thomas. Above the veranda on the wall is painted the name A Thomas. Above this are three higher decorative pieces, the first one has Rose of, The second has Australia and the third has Hotel. Written under the photo is - Rose of Australia Hotel. Photo taken about 1906. Hotel rebuilt after original wooden structure was destroyed by fire. Short history of the Long Gully Fie Brigade by G A Ellis. The brigade started in 1873 and was disbanded in 1932. The brigades's main appliance was a cart or reel pulled by the men. The men used to practice in Creeth Street and later there were competitions with other brigades. A new station was built in 1905. Small satin covered horseshoe, with a decorative frilled netting at front. Three 1.5cm ribbon bows are attached to the front. Three small chiffon “roses” and a wax orange blossom bud on a paper covered wire are attached to the front. Top of the horseshoe has once had a ribbon loop to carry over the bride’s arm, but this has been badly damaged. Large horse-shoe covered in a tube of ruched, cream satin, trimmed on the outer edge, (and the seam of the tube) with narrow cotton lace. A 2.5cm satin ribbon loop, 60 cm long, is attached to the top of the horse-shoe with a 2.5 cm diameter, pink cotton rose.
