Are believed to have been worn by a jockey riding horses inthe Orbost district. They were found stored inside a leather valise with other "horse" items which are also believed to have been owned by the jockey.Horses played a vital role in the history of Orbost both in agriculture and horse racing.This item is connected to that role.Two pairs of spurs. The South and Port Melbourne Thistle Club (later The South and Port Melbourne Thistle Society) held their first annual meeting at the Temperance Hall, Napier Street, South Melbourne on Monday 22 Aug 1899. They held regular concerts and balls and generally celebrated all things Scottish. They had a male Pipe Band and during the First World War when many men were serving in the military they formed a Ladies Pipe Band. The Thistle Cricket Club played in the Scottish Cricket Competition around the time of, and after, the First World War.Small blue & white edged badge with 'SOUTH & PORT MELB' on the blue edge and 'THISTLE C.C.' on the white edge. This photograph depicts female singers accompanied by members of the Beechworth Band at a 'Liedertafel' concert in the main hall at the Burke Museum in 1999. The concert related to an exhibition titled, 'From the Liedertafel to the Skating Rink: Entertainment in Beechworth 1852 - early 1900s', which celebrated the rich and diverse entertainments that were part of Beechworth life in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. 'Liedertafel' is a German tradition that accompanied European settlers to Australia. It refers to a friendly society of men united by an enthusiasm for singing. The Beechworth Liedertafel was established 14 March 1894 at the London Tavern, Camp Street, Beechworth, by president, Mr. A.A. Billson, and a visiting conductor, Mr. H. Fielder. The Beechworth Brass Band was formed by Mr. H. Vandenberg in 1887. Marching bands, choirs, circus acts, theatrical performances, races, and seasonal activities, such as Mr. Spiller's roller skating rink, which was founded in the late 1860s, were among the entertainments on offer in Beechworth.This photograph of the Beechworth Band playing at the Burke Museum is historically significant for the information it conveys about an exhibition at the Burke Museum between September and November 1999. The use of the contemporary Beechworth Band in a 'Liedertafel' performance provides insight into curatorial approaches at the turn of the twenty-first century and improves our understanding of how exhibitions use objects in the Burke Museum's Collection to tell stories about the past in the present. The image is historically and socially significant for attesting to the enduring appeal of local musical associations, which were a popular means of entertainment that fostered social connections among settlers from diverse ethnic backgrounds. George Nixon (1862-1941) selected land in Bete Bolong in the 1890's. He married Emily Warren in 1889 in Orbost. He was a shire councillor. He was a prominent breeder of Clydesdales and after a serious fall off a horse walked with a walking stick and special boot for the rest of his life. He was well-known for his interest in cars, horse-racing and politics. Mrs Nixon (Emily)was the first Red Cross president during WW1. The Australian Red Cross Society (ARCS) was formed just after the outbreak of the First World War in August 1914, initially as a branch of the British Red Cross Society. Its first president was Lady Helen Munro Ferguson, wife of the then governor-general. Via a network of state branches and division, also presided over by women, the organisation extended its influence throughout the community of Australian women, urban and rural. Mary Gilbert was the first curator of the Orbost Museum, and a local teacher.Mary Gilbert was the Orbost Red Cross Superintendent. She was a long time member of Red Cross.Mary Gilbert was a member of Red Cross for over 40 years. She was a noted Orbost identity.1518.1 is a rectangular brass and blue, white and red enamelled badge. The badge shows a red cross in the centre and the words 'RED CROSS EMERGENCY SERVICE'. The practices of early pharmacists are revealed through these glass containers. It has an embossed manufacturer's name, logo and contents (Castor Oil) on one side and identification marks embossed on the underside. 3210.8 is a small clear glass flat bottle with a metal top.It is labelled "SIGMA JUNIPER BACC'. It contains pale brown liquid 3210.9 is a a small moulded clear glass flat bottle with a white bakelite cap.It is labelled "EICHORNS REMEDY 100 ml HELP IN EVERY DROP". 3210.10 is a clear glass bottle with no lid.It has embossed manufacturer's stamp on base. 3210.11 isa clear glass beaker with a label on the front of two concentric green circles inside of which is "PYREX Made in England" with 200 ml below this. 3210.12 is a lear glass jar / bottle with a black lid. This wedding dress came from the estate of Ena Heazlewood. Born in Warrnambool in 1920 Mary Josephine (Ena) Todd was a hairdresser at Josephine’s Salon in Warrnambool. In 1942 she married a Warrnambool man, Jack Heazlewood, a stoker on the H.M.A.S. Sydney at the time. She was wearing this wedding dress. The dress was also worn by two other brides – Ena’s sister-in-law. Mavis McDonald when she married Jim Heazlewood in December 1942 and her sister Rita Todd when she married Bill Kane in 1947 (the bodice of the dress was altered for Rita’s wedding). The photograph shows the wedding of Field James (Jim) Heazlewood and Mavis Marie McDonald who were married on 23/12/1942This dress is of of some significance as it is not only a lovely example of a 1940s wedding dress but it has local provenance, being worn by a Warrnambool person, Ena Todd when she married another Warrnambool identity, Jack Heazlewood in 1942. This is a white lace dress with a fitted bodice, a square neckline and a lace band at the waist edged with satin. The dress has set-in long sleeves with a press stud clips at the wrists. The waist at the back has a loose band of lace material. The skirt is slightly flared and is floor length at the front with a cotton net frill edging, now slightly tattered. The dress at the back has a wide rounded train with a net frill edging. The side ends of the train have inserted lace panels. Square shaped pot holder. Centre panel, and back lining are made from pale blue "silky - type" (probably synthetic) fabric. This 9 X 11cm panel is surrounded by a band of yellow fabric, which also forms a binding around the edges. A blue and white check flannelette fabric forms the padding in the pot holder. Folded strips of floral cotton form a decorative band between the small and larger rectangles. This border is decorated by yellow stitchery. Example of Australian military battledress Jacket - Battledress of olive drab fabric. Jacket is short, and designed to be buttoned to the outside of high-waisted wool serge trousers. An olive green band with two button holes is attached to the inner lower band. The jacket has a fabric belt across the front, with a buckle. Two rectangular pockets extend beneath the lapels. Luke Murphy served as a Councillor from 1902 - 1917 and was elected the 35th Mayor of Bendigo in 1905.
