The Australian Air League was formed in 1934, in an era when Australian Aviators such as Sir Charles Kingsford-Smith, Charles Ulm, Bert Hinkler, Sir Ross and Keith Smith and others were household names and heroes. The first Squadron was opened in Manly (NSW) and the Air League quickly spread throughout that state. In early 1939 the first Squadron was opened in Victoria and in 1944 the first Girls Section was formed. A Plaque was erected on the occassion of the re-enactment. The wording is as follows: "In Recognition of a brave adventure on January 5 1998. Five men: Bern Cuthbertson (skipper), Tom O'Byrne (first mate), Craig Dixon, Rick McMahon and Geoff Zwan, landed in Flinders after 4 weeks at sea having rowed and sailed from Darling Harbour Sydney in the 'Elizabeth', a nine metre whale boat. This voyage re-enacted the discovery and naming of Western Port by Royal Navy Surgeon George Bass and his crew of five in 1798." The first Isle of Wight Hotel was built in c 1870. It burnt down in 1925 and was rebuilt. The hotel was sold and was to be demolished for a new hotel to be built on the site, however before this could take place it burnt down again on the 22nd May, 2010. Five of a collection of slides donated by Laurie Dixon. Water was pumped from Candowie Reservoir to nearby Almurta Basin and gravity fed to Wimbledon Heights Storage Basin. These open water basins were two main components of the water distribution of the day and supplied the area from 1964 to 1989. The Almurta and Wimbledon Heights Storage Basins were decommissioned in 1999 when the San Remo Basin was improved an now is the vital link in the transfer of water from Candowie via the Purification Plant.Five of a collection of slides taken by Laurie Dixon. The original hospital was built in 1924 and the new building opened in 1962. It was closed after not being able to receive funding from State and Federal Governments. It's doors closed on January 31st 2008. A section of the hospital was run as a Nursing Home which opened in 1980. That too is closed. St Pauls was built for the Mission of St James and St John Melbourne as a home for wayward boys, opening in 1928. It later became an orphanage.
