The Warrnambool Patriotic fund was established by the Council under the Mayor at the time, A Fritz Landmann, in 1914 to aid the efforts of the first World War. Most towns across Australia had similar fund raising ventures. People and groups were encouraged to subscribe money as well as donations of food and clothing to be sent to soldiers and overseas groups. The Mayoress and the State Schools also had funds at the time along similar lines. A small item which would have been common at the time which links Warrnambool to the major event of the time. In 1904 an The Worn Out Miners Art Union was formed to raise money for Watson's Sustentation Fund. This state-wide fund raised money to provided support for miners and at this time were supporting 200 miners. The Art Union boasted 100 hundred prizes ranging from 1000 pounds down to 10/6. The Sandhurst No. 1 Fire brigade, the oldest brigade in Bendigo having been formed in 1855, was selling raffle tickets on behalf of the Art Union.
