The Fanning Family home, 'Sunnyside', was built in Loemans Road after William Patrick Fanning migrated from Thurles, Co Tipperary, Ireland. He was one of the early farmers in Bulla. He and his wife, Catherine had five children. Since he and his wife died their descendants continued to live at 'Sunnyside' in Bulla. This book of sea stories belonged to C. Simpson of ‘Elm Bank’, Wangoom. Charles Simpson was a farmer at Wangoom in the 1860s. The township of Wangoom is about ten kilometres from Warrnambool. Charles Simpson was the brother of George Simpson of Nullawarre and William Simpson who had a drapery store in Warrnambool. The owner of the book would be a descendant of one of these early settlers. This book is of interest as it belonged to a member of the Simpson families, several of whom were early settlers in the Warrnambool district. This is a hard cover book of 424 pages. The cover is dark blue with gold lettering and gold scroll work. The book has a preface, 42 chapters of sea stories and, at the back of the book, several pages of advertisements for other books published by Ward, Lock and Co. Kergunyah is a small town in the Kiewa Valley in north east Victoria. It is 10km south of Kiewa (town) and 23 km north of Dederang (town). it is farming country commencing in 1838, developing into a small community in 1974 with a School, Church, Post Office, Football Club, Young Farmer Club C.W.A. Netball Club, Card Club and Fire Brigade.Kergunyah is in the Kiewa Valley. Its history is important in the valley as it developed from a large pastoral run in 1838 into a small community supporting the local farming industry with essential organisations eg. school, fire brigade and social organisations eg. sporting teams, C.W.A.. Its history is significant as this leaflet has details of the organisations up to 1974 and this detail can be compared to organisations at Kergunyah today and can be compared to the history of other small rural communities. This letter was sent by a customer D. Menzies at Skipton to the Mortlake Mill, detailing an unusual payment method for the processing of his wheat into flour. David Menzies was a Scots farmer who lived in Skipton c. 1860's on a bend in the Mount Emu Creek. He helped establish the local school and a lane in the township bears his name. The letter illustrates the nature of commerce and the difficulties of communication and life generally in the country at the time. The bluestone Mortlake Mill built in 1856, has been a prominent landmark in Mortlake for over 150 years. It played a significant role in the commercial life of the town and was initially a wind-mill to process district grain for sale. The goldrush at Ararat 100 km. away led to a temporarily increased population and demand for foodstuffs. In 1857 the Mill was sold to Aikman, Hamilton and Geddes who converted it to steampower and later built the prominent chimney, which is on the Heritage Register as part of the National Estate. D. Menzies at Skipton lived at least 85 km away - his wheat which urgently needed milling, faced a slow and arduous journey by bullock dray. After the demise of the Ararat goldfields and the decline in population (as well as the district soils proving unsuitable for sustained wheat cultivation), the operation of the Mill declined too and the proprietors increased their involvement in other activities - supply of building materials, timber felling and sawmills. Despite the apparent difficulties of conducting business in the 1850's, it is notable that commerce thrived at that time in country districts, as an examination of Mill accounts and records show.Handwritten letter dated 1864 (water-stained)Skipton March 7 1864 [to] Messrs. Following a Royal Commission in 1855, the Gold License was changed to the Miner’s Right, which reduced the fee and required annual payment, rather than monthly or quarterly.The fourth Goldfields Act, passed in early 1858, gave increased privileges to holders of Miner's Rights. These included the right to make residential claims, allowing the cutting of timber on claims and giving the right to build races and dams on any crown lands for mining purposes. This certificate is in the name of Samuel Richardson who brought it to Orbost.This item is of historical significance as it is associated with positive outcomes for gold miners brought about by the Eureka Stockade rebellion and its subsequent democrat changes. The drawing shows all the activity and building roles involved in building a bridge in 1877. The crossing of the Murray River was very important to citizens living in both Echua, but especially those living in Moama and in further NSW regions as it provided them with access to Victorian market regions. The bridge was built privately for Deniliquin farmers, but eventually opened up to the general public.This is significant because it represents the roles of different tradesmen in the construction industry in the late 19th Century. It also shows construction stages . Bridge pylons are being inserted into the fiver banks. Dairy farmers kept a journal to record their transactions and business on the farm. John Creamer' daughter, Mary Cardwell has her father's journal covering the years 1916 to 1942. Mark Grealy digitised the journal for KVHS to preserve the contents and to make it available to the public at the PRO as an item of significance. DVDs have been replaced by USB sticks as technology advances.The journal was kept by local dairy farmer John Creamer, who farmed at Gundowring in the Kiewa Valley. It consists of names of local people and is representative of the business (produce and life) on the dairy farm at the time. Donald Lewis McRae was a farmer of Scottish descent and well known sportsman from the Western District who then became a publican in Horsham. He took over as licensee of the Crown Hotel in Buninyong in 1935. After his death in 1937, his widow Catherine, and subsequently his son Lou and daughter Lil continued to run the hotel until circa 1970.The McRae family were well known and respected in the Buninyong community as the licensees of the Crown Hotel from 1935 to around 1970. It became the location of the Eltham Rechabite Hall. In 1893 a new hall was built and further enlarged in 1919. At the commencement of 1922, the property was purchased from the Independent Order of Rechabites with publicly subscribed funds and a new hall built at a cost of £750 and improved road access constructed to reduce the grade, running from Dudley Street to Henry Street. This hall was eventually replaced with the new Shire Offices and Hall built on the corner of Arthur Street and Main Road, which was opened in 1941. John Russell Senior was a blacksmith, wheelwright, farmer and later chairman of the Orbost Butter Factory, makers of Sunny South Butter (today part of Murray Goulburn Co Ltd). His blacksmith business was in Nicholson Street, Orbost. Robert Pullar Cameron was a Shire Councillor for many years. He married Penuel Hossack and had a family of James, Flora, Penuel and Alex.This item is an example of the book-keeping of an early 20th century Orbost business and is a useful research tool.A white paper account with red lines and black print. About 1912 work began at Newmerella on clearing the track for the railway line from Bairnsdale to Orbost. A canvas town sprang up on the higher land adjacent to the river flats. Local farmers supplied meat, milk and fresh produce to the camp, as well as gaining employment carting and labouring. The line opened in 1916, the Orbost railway station being built on the Newmerella side of the river. This item is associated with the history of the Orbost-Bairnsdale railway line and therefore reflects the role that the rail line played in the social and economic history of Orbost. On April 10 1916, the first scheduled train service left Orbost for Bairnsdale. The Bairnsdale-Orbost railway was opened to serve the agricultural and timber industry. This Welsh Bible belonged to Ellen Hughes who was Welsh-speaking and the daughter of a farmer from Caernarfonshire, Wales. In 1874 she married William Jones of Warrnambool and became a stepmother to Robert Jones who was to become the owner of the property The Union, near Woolsthorpe. Robert’s daughters, Gwen and Edna Jones, gave this Bible to the Warrnambool and District Historical Society. They were both members of the Society. This book is of great importance as a beautiful memento of the 19th century when the Welsh Calvinistic tradition was strong in the Warrnambool district and a Gaelic church was operating in Woodford and services in Gaelic services were held regularly in Warrnambool. This is a hard cover book with a brown leather cover with gold metal edging and a gold clasp. The cover has embossed patterns on the front back and spine. The pages have gilt edges. The text is in the Welsh language and is presented in two columns per page. There is one blue stamp of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society on the first page. This letter was written during World War One from France in 1916 by Private George McDowall to a friend Mrs Maggie Craig. Private George Francis Ernest McDowall was a farmer from Nirranda who enlisted in August 1915. He landed in Egypt in1916 and was transferred to the 8th Battalion. He was killed in action at Pozieres on 25 July 1916 and was buried in France. This letter is an original one and is an important relic from World War One – from a soldier from the Warrnambool area who did not return. The letter is headed ‘From my little dug-out in the trench in France’ and he wrote: ‘It is a great life this if one can only get through it’. He did not survive the war and was killed only two and a half months after this letter was written. This is a letter written from France in 1916 during World War One. It is handwritten in pencil on buff-coloured paper. The paper has been folded and it is a little torn at the top.
