Playbill: The Evening Strollers, 1919
Murray Comrie Collection. A playbill for a performance titled 'The Evening Strollers' held at the Victoria Theatre, Tarnagulla on Saturday June 28, probably 1919. States that performance will raise money for 'Combined Public Peace Celebrations'. Performers include: Miss F. 1. The Tarnagulla Presbyterian church was built in late 1863 at an estimated cost of 650 pounds plus bricks, and opened for services June 19th 1864. The first minister was Rev. Hamilton. A Sabbath School also opened at this time. The success of gold mining in the area and the resultant population fluctuations, had an impact on the church and in 1866 it was only operating on an occasional basis. It closed in the late 1870's, reopening in 1882 as a mission station. In 1912, repairs and improvements valued at 150 pounds were carried out. In 1926, when the Laanacoorie church closed, the building was transported to Tarnagulla to become the Sunday School Hall. In 1975 it became the Uniting Church. 2. The union Bank was originally a sub-branch of Melbourne and built a brick building in 1859. In 1866 the Union Bank bought the two storied building seen in the photo, from the Colonial Bank. where it remained until 1888. Two newspaper articles from the Bendigo Advertiser, one from 22/08/1953 and the other from 29/06/1950 relating to the presbyterian church and the Union Bank in Tarnagulla. Transcripts: Tarnagulla Borough Rate Books, 1864 & 1875
Most original Tarnagulla Rate Books were destroyed by the Shire of Bet Bet, pulped for the war effort in either WWI or II. Only a couple survived, found under the stage in the Dunolly Town Hall. These are held by Dunolly Museum.
