The photos in this album show the carefree, adventurous spirit of the young men soon to be ANZACS Many young men from the market garden, dairy, poultry and fruit farms as well local businesses enlisted c 1914 at the beginning of WWI. The older men, women and children then had to manage the farms while they worried about the dangers facing their beloved family members. A record of some of the experiences of men from Moorabbin Shire who enlisted c1914 and were sent to Egypt at the beginning of WW1 1914-19A thick cardboard album of 24 pages with inserts for 2 small black and white photographs per page . Scenes from Egypt c 1914 - 1918 showing Australian soldiers, naval vessels, horses, carts, pyramids, houses, buildings, camels, local inhabitants and countryside. The photograph is from the album of Ivy Child. It shows a rare scene of the Mountain Grange Homestead. Mountain Grange was built by Thomas Hand on his 306 acres. By 1881 he had completed the homestead and a large barn. Thomas Hand died suddenly in 1888 and his family took over the property. His son William Hand lived in the homestead until 1931 until it was demolished due to white ants. The great barn was demolished in 1930. A new home was built and Will stayed until 1939 when the property was sold to the Shire of Lillydale. It is now the site of the Kalorama Oval. This photograph is c1927 Ivy May Child (1910 – 1989) was the daughter of Arthur Edward (Ted) Child (1878 – 1964) and Ethel May Madden (1888 – 1970). Ted Child was the son of Matthew Francis Child (1839 – 1933) and Martha Jeeves (1857 – 1926). He was the grandson of one of the early pioneers Francis Child. Ivy grew up on the family property on Childs Road and took many photographs. Most of these are glued into her photo album. The album covered the years from c1927 – 1932. Ivy married Henry William Burgess (1906 – 1968) in 1944. The photographs remain in their original state in the album with individual copies made. Black and white photograph showing a cleared area. There is a wire and posr fence in the foreground, a tall row of pine trees across the centre with two buildings visible. One in front of the trees RHS and he other in a gap in the centre. Chinese book set in album case. The set of three books are printed in Chinese in red and black ink. They include text and illustrations printed on lightweight paper. The books have a yellow covers and are stitched at the spine. The album is made of firm card and is covered in a patterned silken fabric with handmade bone and fabric hinges.

These relate to the past service of SQLDR Victor James in 1946. His interpreter friends appear to have been Mr. & Mrs Lo. Miss Vera Wong, typist. There are some photos of Chinese Nationalist Army soldiers, The photos of surrendering Japanese Army Soldiers appears to have been taken by a trained photographer.This photo album is a maroon dimpled cover. It used to be bound with two screws on left side. The cover flexes about 3 cm from the left. The rear cover is of the same material. Embossed on front cover is an image of a leaping horse in a circle with the words "Photo Album" below. Inside are a large quantity of B & W photos of the Japanese surrender of Hong Kong and Kowloon.
