A memorial rock was installed in the grounds of the army depot at Sisley Avenue in 2003 to commemorate the Charge at the Ney undertaken on 7 August 1915. When Victorian Mounted Rifles departed the depot there was uncertainty as to its future so the plaque was removed and lodged with the museum. The 8th Light Horse Regiment AIF was raised at Broadmeadows Victoria in September 1914 under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Alexander White and formed part of the 3rd Light Horse Brigade. The regiment served at Gallipoli where in a courageous but ill-fated charge at the Nek on 7 August 1915 it suffered horrendous casualties including Lieutenant Colonel White. Rebuilt in Egypt under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Leslie Maygar VC the regiment went on the serve throughout the Middle East Campaign. Colonel Maygar died of wounds at Beersheba when the regiment was attacked by enemy aircraft while waiting to follow up the successful charge of the 4th LH Brigade on 30 October 1917. The 8th Light Horse AIF was disbanded in 1919, but soon after re-raised as the 8th (Indi) Light Horse in the Citizen Military Forces, superseding 16th (Indi) Light Horse. It had its headquarters at Benalla with sub-units throughout the Upper Murray and Northeast Victoria. In December 1941, the regiment converted from horse to mechanised, initially as 8th Reconnaissance Battalion then in July 1942 it became 8th Cavalry Regiment and served in Northern Territory. As Japanese threat to the mainland declined the regiment was disbanded. Bendigo Advertiser ''The way we were'' from 2000. Undertakers: Peter Fizelle and Michael Mulqueen formed a partnership in 1898 which continued until Fizelle's death in 1901. It was then that Michael Mulqueen became the sole proprietor of the parlour with his brother John in charge of stables - an integral part of the business as many of the cabs were hired from the ranks next to the Shamrock Hotel. The business continued in this format until 1926 when the brothers purchased a motorised hearse, built in Melbourne by Australian Motor Industries. Ticket printed on 200 gsm white cardboard featuring ESCO opening postcard ticket (Reg. Item 608) for the BTM's celebration of 100 years of Electric Trams on 25/9/2005. Ticket No. 0001. These items were used by tram and bus drivers as part of the Metcard machine management system. The PM (portable memory) key was issued to each driver. At the start of a shift, the driver would put it into a cream-coloured terminal at the sign-on point (starter's office in the depot) and transfer their shift information onto the key. Once the driver reached the vehicle, they put the key into the black-coloured terminal (tram driver's keypad - TDKP or bus driver's keypad) to upload the shift data to the vehicle. Lists church services conducted at Linton Parish (of Church of England) by Rev. Martin between April and September 1913. Charges are not itemised but total amount charged for services was nine pounds. Note at bottom of page: "Received payment, (signed) S.W. Martin". Yields information about the style and printing of tickets used in Ballarat and Bendigo tramways and how they were presented.Block of 25 No. 13 cent Parcel Tickets. Two part printed ticket, using sepia ink on white paper with a gummed back, stapled with a single staple at the top onto a cardboard sheet. Ticket Nos. A007001 to A007025 The ticket butt or top portion has the form number "TYE 3-590". The second or middle portion was to be affixed to the parcel to be carried. It has the name of the organisation (SECV), "Parcel Ticket 13c", conditions of carriage and ticket number, prefixed with the letter A. The lower portion was retained by the sender, was to be initialled by the conductor, organisation name, "Parcel Ticket 13c", conditions of use, ticket number and a space where to be initialled by the conductor. According to records searched, Donald John Hatton was born born in 1899 in Perth. His father was John and mother was Annie Rebecca Perry Hendon(?) He died in Victoria, aged 78, at Box Hill. This photograph could be related to the Rev, L. W. Hatton and Mrs. Hatton formerly of Healesville Presbyterian Church. A photo of Legatee Doc Sargeant with a stethoscope looking at a junior legatee in 1954. The girl's badge says her name is Robyn Leggo. Melbourne Legacy began proving medical and dental care for junior legatees in the 1930s. At first Legatees who were professional doctors and dentists provided care free of charge. When size of the demand was realised Melbourne Legacy opened a dental clinic. For many years the dental clinic was run out of Legacy House in Swanston St. The photo appeared in the July 1954 edition of the Legacy Newsletter with the caption "Legatee Doc Sargeant examines a Junior." The accompanying article say that girls joining Legacy are given a medical examination free of charge. A doctor is in attendance on Friday nights when the girls have classes and he may be consulted whenever necessary. Legacy has as it's disposal a large number of specialists . Fred Pitman Morris was born in Ballarat in 1872 and married Sara Lance in 1895. He was initially a telegraph operator before becoming clerk of the Eaglehawk court circuit. By 1923 he was a Secretary of the Sentences Board and by 1936 he was the Officer in Charge of Children's Courts. He was a prolific writer of hymns, particularly for the Chapman-Alexander Mission Party, an evangelical revivalist movement in the early 20th century. Sister Elizabeth Lindsey worked at the RVIB Nursery since it's inception in 1933. During her time there, she took photographs of the children, whom she had care of, documenting their life at RVIB as well as the wartime displacement to Olinda when the army took over the St Kilda Road building. Adopting one of her orphan charges, Sister Lindsay left RVIB in 1945. The Postmaster-General's Department (PMG) was a department of the Australian federal government, established at Federation in 1901, whose responsibilities included the provision of postal and telegraphic services throughout Australia. It was abolished in December 1975 and replaced by the Postal and Telecommunications Department. Telephone calls were transferred through exchanges by manual operators who staffed switchboards throughout the country. The clock was used to time calls in order to levy appropriate charge for telephone usage.The use of manual telephone exchanges played an important role in Australian telecommunications history, not just for day -to-day business and commercial use, but for social connections and communication during emergency. A programme for a 'Gown of the Year' Gala parade presented by the Mannequins' Association of Victoria at the Menzies Hotel. The association were members of the modelling profession. They organised the gala and gave their services free so that all proceeds may to Junior Legacy Victoria. Every frock in the parade is an individual creation of Melbourne's top couturiers. Afterwards the gowns were put on display for the public at Melbourne Town Hall and entry charge of 2/- was contributed to Legacy.A record that Legacy used gala performances for fundraising events. Three examples of the ammunition charge clips used during World War 1 by the Australian and allied forces. These were preloaded with five live rounds of ammunition for the SMLE .303" rifle and were a convenient method of quickly replenishing the 10 round magazine. The clip is made of stamped spring steel with a matte black paint finish. These clips were preloaded with live ammunition and carried in the soldiers ammunition pouches. Whilst in the field the clips were salvaged and reloaded with fresh rounds when the opportunity was available, ie during a lull in battle, etc.Some markings present: two examples are stamped with "E" and "ll", the other is stamped with "K" and "ll".
