Case, c. 1920s
This case belonged to Leonard Thomas (VX21070) who was born on 23 Aug 1900 in Cardiff England. By the Second World War, Thomas had emigrated to Australia and was residing in Elwood when he enlisted in Caulfield in 1940. Thomas served during the war as a Private and was discharged on 31 May 1949 from the AIF Mov and Control Group. His full service records are not currently available via the National Archives Australia and so it is unclear whether this case was part of the equipment of his role or a personal item. This case contains a number of inscriptions which may aid researchers to understand the life and movements of the owner, Leonard Thomas. The apparent crest is of special interest, suggesting that Leonard Thomas was connected to equine activities though the unavailability of his service records mean this fact is not confirmed. The item has interpretive potential, to discuss matters of equipment, emigration, use of horses during war and possibly leisure activities if the crest is taken as a reference to polo.Horse shoe shaped case in brown leather constructed of a lid and base. Used for storing shirt collars. Lid and base respectively constructed of two pieces of leather (one top and one edge) which are stitched to heavy card interior lining, mustard yellow in colour. The lid and base are held together by a sewn on leather strip and fastened at the top with a metal buckle; the holed strap through which the buckle attaches has broken. This strap in turn passes vertically down the back of the case and underneath (forming the strip which joins the two halves). Exterior base carries handwritten inscriptions, as does the interior lid. Black ink stamps throughout.Stamps read "L THOMAS" along an upturned horse shoe, underneath which are possibly clubs and an up-facing arrow. Service number written on side of case reads "VX21070". Handwritten inscription reads "Leonard Thomas/33 [illegible three words]/Cardiff/April 20th 1921." Interior of lid reads "LEONARD THOMAS 5-2-20" with a striped triangle below.case, horseshoe, cardiff, england, united kingdom, second world war, elizabeth thomas, world war ii, world war 2, 1940s, emigration -

The Beechworth Burke Museum
Functional object - Silver Vesta Case, David & Lionel Spiers, 1885
Vesta cases, also known as match safes, are small boxes that are used to carry matches and keep them safe from the elements. In the early 1800's, it was common to carry matches, since some type of portable fire was needed to light lanterns and stoves. The matches of that day were crude compared to today's standards, and were known to light when making contact with each other, and sometimes even spontaneously. In order to alleviate this potentially hazardous situation, it made good sense to utilize a Vesta case or match safe. One of the more interesting features of the vesta case or match safes is that they almost always include some type of rough or ribbed surface, usually on the bottom of the case that is used for striking the matches. This vesta case is a portable pocket vesta. These cases take their name from the virgin Roman goddess of fire, home, hearth and family. Usually Vesta was depicted as the fire in her temple. Only Vestals (her priestesses) were allowed into her temple. Her association with fire made her name the natural choice for British companies that manufactured matches. The hallmarking of sterling silver is based on a combination of marks that makes possible the identification of origin and age. The town mark identifies the Assay Office where the item was verified. The town mark on this piece is an anchor, so it is from Birmingham, England. The lion passant certifies the silver quality, as at least 925. The maker's mark, identifying the silversmith presenting the piece to the assay office is D&LS for David and Lionel Spiers. The date letter identifies the year the piece was verified, this item was verified in 1885. Lionel Spiers was a significant figure in the Jewellery Quarter and in 1906 was chairman of the Jewellers and Silversmiths Association. The item also has NHILL 1928 engraved on the front, this is likely a recent addition to the piece. Nhill is a town in Victoria so it could be that the previous owner lived here or it was gifted in commemoration. The social history objects held in the Burke Museum's collection help to tell the stories of Beechworth's past by showing the social, cultural, and economic aspects of the town's history.Silver vesta case with ribbed strike plate at the end and an etched design. Box, Warrnambool Club N A Bowman, Mid 20th century
This box once contained cigarettes supplied or sold by the Warrnambool Club. This club was formed in 1873 as a social club for men of the more affluent and professional classes in Warrnambool and district. The club rooms were originally in the Warrnambool Club Hotel established by John Amon Smith in Kepler Street between Timor and Koroit Streets. By 1876 Warrnambool Club membership had grown to 70 and the premises at the hotel were considered too small. A new Warrnambool Club building was opened in 1877 in Kepler Street and this building and the club still exist today. Nothing is known of Samuel Dempster except that he was Irish-born and served in World War Two. This box is of minor interest as a memento of the Warrnambool Club in the mid 20th century and of Samuel Dempster whose connections to Warrnambool are not at this time known. This is a rectangular-shaped cardboard box with a hinged lid pasted at the centre. The box is buff-coloured with gold printing and handwriting in black ink on the top of the lid. The lid has originally been gilt-edged but most of this has been rubbed off. Warrnambool Club Special Virginia Cigarettes (Plain) Mr Samuel Dempster C/O Mr K. J. Case Leather for Reading Spectacles
This small, slim case was manufactured to contain reading spectacles in a secure but yet "manageable pocket or purse" environment. It was manufactured to contain reading glasses that would not exceed 12mm in thickness. The product was targeting the "professional" reader ie. accountant, lawyer, business and property managers. Because it was made for a "eyesight" specialist to contain "prescription" reading spectacles the quality had to be of a higher level than cheaper "off the shelf" ones. This case was made and used in the late 1800's and early 1900's.This case, for spectacles, holds a significant position in that it points to a time in history when rural Australian families required to travel long distances to obtain professional "eyesight" treatment which, on the whole, were only available in the capital cities (in this case Melbourne). In the pre 1960's, the greater the distance from capital cities for Australian rural folk to seek professional medical, dental, nose ,eye and throat specialists the greater the time involved resulting in the greater expense. This "isolation" brought about increased costs not experienced by city residences. The quality and durability of this case was a pre-requisite for the Kiewa Valley based resident. This slim spring lid spectacle case has a body of light steel over layered by a fine skin dyed(dark brown) leather coating. The inside, of the case, has a 1mm lip opposite the hinged end (to secure the reading spectacles within the case). The inside is fully covered by a "royal" purple felt (to provide the spectacles with a scratch free enclosure). At the outside base in gold lettering "H.B. BISSELL" underneath "EYESIGHT" underneath "SPECIALIST" underneath "BARKLY st", underneath "FOOTSCRAY"personal effects, spectacles, eye fashion, reading glasses -
